With the 25th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, the Ottawa Senators have selected Jonas Lagerberg Hoen from Leksands IL of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL).
About Lagerber-Hoen
Jonas Lagerberg Hoen becomes the sixth Swedish player selected in the first round of the NHL Draft, joining Ivar Stenberg (2nd Overall), Viggo Bjorck (8th Overall), Alexander Command (12th Overall), Malte Gustafsson (13th Overall), and Elton Hermansson (19th Overall). He was considered a prospect who could surprise people with where he was selected, and the Senators surprisingly selected him 25th overall. The pick could be worth it, though.
Lagerberg Hoen has the confidence and the talent to be a high-volume NHL scorer. He generates a ton of offensive chances, and his speed and agility help him constantly join the rush. He has a great combination of size and speed, and the hope is that when healthy next season, he gets plenty of experience in the Swedish Hockey League. He had nine goals and 16 points in nine games in the Junior Swedish Hockey League before suffering an injury.
THW Prospect Profile Excerpt
Lagerberg Hoen absolutely torched the U20 Nationell last season as he scored a whopping 27 goals in 38 games with 30 points. That alone put him in a tie with Bjorck and one more than Stenberg. He was off to a great start this season, as he averaged a goal per game with nine and had 16 points, while also seeing some games in the SHL. However, he missed the rest of the season, as he suffered a knee injury and required surgery, per McKeen’s Hockey Felix Robbins. If he weren’t injured, you can bet he would have been productive and would’ve played a role for Sweden at the World U18 Championship.
In case you couldn’t tell from his goals scored, Lagerberg Hoen is a high-volume and quality shooter, as it is his best attribute. He has a tremendous release and accuracy and does a great job to instantly find those shooting lanes and opportunities. Even if he doesn’t have control of the puck, he has a great sense to find open ice and get into position to tee up a powerful one-timer or get a quick snapshot off. He has tremendous speed and puck protection skills to find and attack the middle and challenge defenders and beat goalies easily. He may not have the smoothest of hands, and he can work on his puck control, but he does a decent job to find his teammates and set them up.
While he still needs to learn to be a little meaner given his frame, and he needs to add some strength, he can show that he can play a heavy game, winning puck battles and playing with an edge at times. He provides great pressure on puck carriers and is always giving defenders fits with his compete and drive. He’s extremely dangerous on the rush, as he’s a smooth and powerful skater, being able to cut through defenders or quickly go to the outside and cut back in. When he generates that speed, he takes off and is difficult to stop. He has strong edges and a great burst of speed when coming out of the corners.
How This Affects the Senators’ Plans
The Senators are desperately looking for goal-scoring to replace Brady Tkachuk’s impact, so they selected Lagerberg Hoen with one of the picks they received from the Florida Panthers in the trade. They traded the other first-round pick they received to get William Eklund, another Swede.
The Senators already have some great defensive depth in the prospect pool; Carter Yakemchuk earned NHL experience, but they still have Logan Hensler and Jorian Donovan in the prospect pool. However, they were lacking in offensive depth, especially at the wing. With his goal-scoring prowess, Lagerberg Hoen is a major pick for their prospect pool.
