LA Kings Lock in Defenseman Brandt Clarke With 5-Year Extension

After a weekend of chaos involving the 2026 NHL Draft and shocking trade news, the Los Angeles Kings have taken a major step in signing defenseman Brandt Clarke to a five-year contract extension with an average annual value (AAV) of $7.4 million.

After a 2025-26 breakout season, extending Clarke solidified him as part of the team’s future. Locking him up before he reached restricted free agency (RFA) eliminated any uncertainty about the 6-foot-2 defenseman’s role with the organization. The extension also provides stability while ensuring one of their rising young talents remains part of the franchise’s core.

Locking up Their Young Core

The deal occurred during draft weekend, on June 26, 2026, a time when teams were strengthening their rosters through trades and other draft-week picks. The extension also highlights the organization’s confidence in its long-term direction under general manager Ken Holland. With veterans such as Drew Doughty providing leadership and remaining under contract through the 2026–27 season, the Kings are not expected to begin contract negotiations with him this summer. In the meantime, Clarke is expected to become the center of Los Angeles’ defense for seasons to come.

Great Season for the Rising Defenseman

Clarke had a breakout season in the 2025-26 campaign, as he racked up 32 assists and 40 points in a full 82 games. He became a dependable defenseman, contributing at both ends of the ice. His puck-moving ability and calm play helped the Kings create scoring chances. One of his greatest strengths is his ability to control play from the defensive zone. In today’s hockey, defensemen who can transition quickly while staying solid are highly valued. He brings both, making him a strong fit for the Kings’ fast-paced style of play.

His overall development has arguably been even more impressive, since he was selected with the No. 8 pick in the 2021 NHL Draft. Clarke now appears positioned to become one of the franchise’s cornerstone players as that transition continues.

Doughty’s Influence on Clarke

Doughty’s influence on Clarke cannot be overlooked. One of the NHL’s top defensemen for well over a decade, he has served as both a mentor and example for younger players entering the organization. Clarke has had the opportunity to learn from one of the game’s best, as he gained insight into the consistency and professionalism required to succeed at the highest level. As Doughty enters the later stages of his outstanding career, Clarke is positioned to eventually become the leader of the Kings’ defense corps. Locking him in now provides stability as the Kings prepare for a defensive transition.

Clarke Set to Take Over the Blue Line

As the Kings commit long-term to their defensive future, the attention is shifted to how Clarke could boost and shape the next era of the Kings’ blue line. The young defender has shown his vision and ability to read the game at a high level, consistently making smart decisions under pressure. The Kings are in good hands with a defenseman who can execute and drive play at both ends of the ice.

That said, some challenges may rise as Clarke is still developing and the Kings will need to balance his growth carefully, giving him room to expand his game without overwhelming him too early. Still, their direction and the organization’s plan are clear. The Kings didn’t invest in Clarke just for depth, but they see him as a foundational piece. As the team’s identity continues to evolve, his role is expected to increase in both ice time and responsibility. If his development stays on its current path, Clarke won’t simply be part of the Kings’ blue line; rather, he’ll be the player shaping it for many seasons to come.
