The NHLPA announced on Sunday that 23 restricted free agents had filed for salary arbitration with their teams.
The group is headlined by the Washington Capitals’ Braden Holtby, the Detroit Red Wings’ Gustav Nyquist, the New York Rangers’ Derek Stepan and Arizona Coyotes Mikkel Boedker. Most players wind up settling and signing a contract with their team prior to arbitration, but the move on the part of the player both exercises their rights and does guarantee that the player and the team will come to a deal over the summer.
For any players that do not reach a deal prior to a scheduled arbitration date, both the team and the player’s representation will present their case to an independent arbiter who will put a price on deal for the two parties. (This is actually much more complicated than that single sentence explanation. Read this for a more meaty explanation.)
Here’s a complete list of the players who have filed for arbitration:
Arizona Coyotes: Mikkel Boedker, Phil Samuelsson, Brendan Shinnimin
Buffalo Sabres: Phil Varone
