In an unexpected announcement, forward Curtis Glencross has announced he is retiring, according to TSN’s Darren Dreger.
Dreger quotes Glencross saying, “We have weighed our options and with the young family I’m enjoying a lot of firsts with them.”
It’s a surprising move, because Glencross, though he struggled after being traded to the Washington Capitals last season, was far from being an ineffective player who couldn’t help a team. (See the HERO chart below.) All told, he posted 13 goals and 22 assists in 71 games last year and is one season removed from hitting 24 points in 38 games for the Flames.
He entered the summer as a free agent, and couldn’t find a deal. He took a tryout deal with the Maple Leafs, but was ultimately cut from training camp. Almost immediately he had a tryout deal with the Avalanche, but that did not stick either.
Glencross has 2 daughters and an infant son and doesn't see either the KHL or Europe as a viable option.

Glencross will retire an undrafted veteran of 507 NHL games who entered the league at age 24. He’ll finish up with 134 goals and 141 assists, including two 20-goal seasons. He played nine NHL seasons, primarily with the Calgary Flames, but also taking partial seasons with the Anaheim Ducks, Columbus Blue Jackets, Edmonton Oilers and Capitals.
