Auston Matthews Scores 400th Career NHL Goal

Toronto Maple Leafs‘ captain Auston Matthews has scored his 400th career NHL goal. He is now just 20 goals behind Mats Sundin for the most goals scored by a Maple Leaf in franchise history.

His 400th career goal came against the Buffalo Sabres on a play set up by Mitch Marner that allowed him to score on the empty net. The goal comes just minutes after he assisted on Marner’s 100th career point.

Matthews, 27, has been a member of the Maple Leafs since he was drafted in 2016 NHL draft. In 626 games, he has scored 400 goals and 325 assists for 724 points.

Matthews is the sixth-fastest player to reach 400 goals, he has done it in 628, putting him ahead of Alex Ovechkin. There is an argument to be made that he could be the only active NHL player in the league to pass Ovechkin and become the greatest goalscorer in the NHL.
