Rankings

The old saying goes persistence pays off. In the case of Barrie Colts’ center Ben Wilmott, truer words have never been spoken. His journey to the NHL Draft in Buffalo started in Seattle but then has taken him to New Jersey, Chicago, Sioux Falls and then multiple stops in the Ontario Hockey League. He will take his talents to Columbus in the fall as he’s set to play for the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2026-27.

While Wilmott has been passed over at the NHL Draft, the 19-year old forward who turns 20 in August has spent the 2025-26 season as one of the fastest risers in the draft according to NHL Central Scouting. His jump of 94 spots was propelled by his performance for both the Colts and London Knights this season. But he’s making his biggest statement during the ongoing OHL playoffs. He’s fifth in the league with 11 goals during these playoffs and tied for seventh in points with 22. This includes a couple of highlight-reel plays showing off the offensive instincts he has.

Wilmott can create offense in multiple ways. His passing was on full display in the OHL Finals against Kitchener with a great saucer pass to Emil Hemming to create a goal on the rush. But then, he can setup himself up to be in position to finish. As of this writing, Barrie’s top line of Wilmott, Hemming and Mason Zebeski have combined for 65 points during these playoffs showing the number of different ways they can beat teams.

Interest in Wilmott does go beyond the offensive ability he’s shown. He’s a late bloomer which shows the continuous willingness to improve even when teams have passed him by before. He’s very competitive and has a physical presence to him that can translate to the next level. His versatility will also be attractive to teams as he can play in all important situations including key faceoffs and both special teams units. As with anyone at this stage, he needs to add speed to his game. He also needs to put in the work away from the puck. He’ll have every opportunity to do that against better competition in the Big-10.

Teams that draft Wilmott will see the offense he brings but also see the massive, overall improvement in his game. It’s not always the easiest thing to do to be drafted as an overage player. Strong, versatile centers are valuable in the later rounds. Wilmott has done plenty this season and has put himself on the map to hear his name called in Buffalo.

Ben Wilmott – NHL Draft Projection

Wilmott’s persistence and late bloom has allowed him the chance to be taken in the later rounds. His offensive prowess especially during this playoff run has boosted his draft stock even as a reentry.

Quotables

“Wilmott projects as a skilled, middle-six offensive forward who could play on a second power play unit and be a complementary driver at the NCAA level. If he strengthens his two-way detail and reduces puck turnover risk, he has the tools to compete for a pro contract and eventually push for NHL depth role consideration.” – Neutral Zone

“He’s a competitive player with offensive instincts. His experience at the junior level and his ability to play a complete game will be a valuable addition to our lineup.” –Barrie Colts GM Marty Williamson
