Devils and Jets Working on Blockbuster Connor Hellebuyck Trade

The New Jersey Devils and Winnipeg Jets are reportedly working toward a blockbuster trade involving star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, potentially bringing an end to months of uncertainty surrounding his future in Winnipeg.

Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman reported Friday morning that negotiations between the two organizations are underway. “Sources: New Jersey and Winnipeg are working on a Connor Hellebuyck deal. We will see what develops,” Friedman wrote on X.

The development comes as Hellebuyck’s team-imposed suspension expires Friday, creating additional urgency for Winnipeg to resolve the situation. Hellebuyck, 33, publicly requested a trade during the offseason after expressing frustration with the Jets’ direction. The three-time Vezina Trophy winner remains one of the NHL’s most accomplished goaltenders despite recording an .895 save percentage (SV%) during the 2025-26 season.

For New Jersey, acquiring Hellebuyck would represent a significant upgrade in goal. The Devils finished last season with an .889 team SV%, ranking in the bottom half of the league. However, completing a deal presents financial challenges. Hellebuyck carries an $8.5 million annual cap hit through the 2030-31 season, meaning New Jersey will likely need to move salary or negotiate retention.

Winnipeg will also be seeking a substantial return for its franchise goaltender, potentially involving established players, prospects or draft capital. While discussions are reportedly progressing, no trade has been finalized, and the potential return remains unknown. If completed, the move would dramatically reshape New Jersey’s goaltending situation and end Hellebuyck’s lengthy tenure with the Jets.
