Ducks News and Notes: Broadcast Changes, Number Retirement, and More

We have officially reached the latter portion of the offseason, everyone. The Anaheim Ducks play preseason hockey this month– cue the confetti! The team has announced some changes to its broadcast, including a new streaming platform and format. They also recently announced the retirement of a legendary player’s number. Things are quickly ramping up in Anaheim as the organization prepares for another season.

Ducks Announce Partnership With Prime Video

The team’s contract with Victory+, their former broadcast home, ended last season. They needed a new streaming platform to support their broadcast, and they found that with Prime Video. Prime, owned by Amazon, will also be the exclusive streaming host for the Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild, and St. Louis Blues this season.

These games will be streamed to the team’s Southern California market, while out-of-town fans can watch on ESPN+ and NHL Network. 65 of the team’s games will also be broadcast locally over-the-air on KCOP-13 or Fox 11. In the first year of the agreement with Prime Video, fans will be able to stream all games for free. It is unclear whether the service will begin charging for games next season.

The team’s move will launch a more robust, multimedia broadcast network. “The NHL’s newly launched centralized production for regional broadcasts provides the Ducks network with comprehensive production services, including robust programming, premium game production, advanced graphics and replay capabilities, and technical and engineering support,” says the NHL.

It seems that the organization is looking to expand its reach, accessibility, and production value this season. Coming off a hot 2025-26, it is a smart move to build on the momentum and growing fan base that was just getting started last season. A Prime Video partnership could be just what the Ducks needed.

Aly Lozoff Let Go

In light of the new broadcast partnership, the team opted to let go of longtime rinkside reporter and Emmy winner, Aly Lozoff. Lozoff worked with the team for seven years, conducting interviews, hosting events, and being a valued member of the team and community. Per her post on X, “the role has lost its value due to budget cuts”, and she noted that she was “disappointed and sad” by the team’s decision.

However, she did thank the team for “entrusting [her] to represent their franchise for the last seven years and to tell the stories of their athletes.” An outpouring of support and well-wishes appeared online for Lozoff. Fans indicated that they will miss her interviews, storytelling, positivity, and impact. Lozoff brought a human-interest angle to hockey that cannot be replicated by analysis and commentary alone.

With the Ducks no longer having a rinkside reporter, the intermission reports will look a little different. The Prime Video partnership may bring a broader, nationalized approach to intermission reports, rather than a team-specific one. John Ahlers and Bryan Hayward, the team’s play-by-play announcer and color commentator, could also be seeing more airtime with their intermission analysis. We will have to wait and see what the broadcast looks like next month.

Ryan Getzlaf’s Number to be Retired

The team also announced that they will retire jersey number 15, the number of legendary center Ryan Getzlaf. He spent 17 seasons in Anaheim, winning a Stanley Cup in 2007. He became captain in 2010 and posted 87 points in his career-best season. He retired in 2022 and was one of just three NHL players in history to win a Stanley Cup and five international gold medals.

He holds the franchise record for most games with the Ducks (1,150) and is the longest-tenured captain in team history. He totaled 1,013 points in his career and surpassed Teemu Selanne in 2021 to become Anaheim’s leading scorer.

“My family and I are so grateful to the Samuelis and the Ducks organization for this incredible honor,” he said. “None of this would be possible without all the amazing teammates, coaches, and support staff I had in my career. He will be honored and will have his number hung in the rafters on Jan. 30. He joins Scott Niedermeyer, Paul Kariya, and Selanne as players who have earned the honor.

The Ducks will play the first preseason game on Sep. 20 against the San Jose Sharks, the first of four preseason games that week. They kick off the regular season on Oct. 2 versus the Vegas Golden Knights in Vegas.
