When watching Layne Gallacher, you can tell why the Guelph Storm are excited to see what he can do next season as a second-year OHL player. He was acquired by the Storm from the Brantford Bulldogs in a trade that saw Philadelphia Flyers prospect Jett Luchanko head to Brantford ahead of the trade deadline in the OHL. As for Gallacher, he has shown the potential to be a strong asset for the Storm as they look to build a team that can compete in the Memorial Cup in 2027 as the host team.
What stands out about Gallacher’s game to this point is his defense. He has a relentless work ethic and motor from his center position to act as a “third defenseman” in his zone. He constantly finds himself in the right position to break up plays, whether it is getting into passing lanes or keeping opponents to the outside of the ice. When the puck is going the other way, that energy and motor that Gallacher plays with in the defensive end translates well. He is almost always the first player in on the forecheck.

His off-puck game shines in the offensive zone. At this point in his development, Gallacher plays more of a play-supporting role. While he shows offensive flashes and takes advantage of opportunities around the net, seeing him become more consistent in the offensive zone could be the key to unlocking his full potential. His overall playmaking skills need some refinement, as he is prone to mistakes when pressured with the puck on his stick more than you would hope for a player to be.
Heading into next season, Gallacher should be taking on a bigger role with the Storm as a building piece for the organization. With the strong defensive game he already has, tied in with his strong performance at the faceoff dot, if he can take his offensive game to another level, he has the chance to become a strong top-six player for the Storm next season.

Layne Gallacher- NHL Draft Projection
While the defensive-minded game that Gallacher plays is something that NHL organizations like to have, the lack of consistency and high-end offensive skill to this point in his development will likely push him towards the middle rounds of the 2026 Draft, possibly in the fourth round.
Quotables
“He’s a quality two-way C, who might be playing down the lineup on a talent-laden Brantford (OHL) team, but brings grit, tenacity, speed, pace, and a solid two-way game with some power and physicality.”- Upside Hockey
“He’s a strong-bodied, hardworking center who skates well and has grown and begun to fill out over the last couple of years, while still having room for both. He’s not the most physical player, but he’s committed and plays a pro style. He’s also good in the faceoff dot and can PK. He has some secondary skill, too, and I expect him to take a step next year playing for the 2027 Memorial Cup hosts.”- (from ‘2026 NHL Draft: 30 intriguing prospects who just missed Wheeler’s final ranking’, The Athletic, May 28, 2026)
Strengths
- Great work ethic and motor
- Positionally sound defensively
- Great IQ on the ice; processes the game defensively very well
- Has high-end skating speed
- Strong at the faceoff dot
Under Construction- Improvements to Make
- Is mistake-prone with the puck when pressured
- Adding more playmaking skills to his toolbox will help him take the next step offensively
- While showing offensive flashes, he needs to become more consistent
NHL Potential
With the work ethic and motor that Gallacher has, along with the defensive-minded game, he has the potential to carve out a fourth-line checking role and a penalty kill specialist in the NHL. If he can develop his offensive game as he continues to mature, he could end up being a secondary offensive source as well.
