Luke Schairer – 2026 NHL Draft Prospect Profile

Luke Schairer

2025-26 Team: USNDTP Juniors (USHL)
Date of Birth: Jan. 30, 2008
Place of Birth: Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.
Ht: 6-foot-3 Wt: 201 pounds

NHL Draft Eligibility: 2026 first-year eligible

Rankings

There are a lot of talented defensive defensemen in the 2026 NHL Draft, and Luke Schairer is no exception. He has already established himself as a solid stay-at-home defenseman, but he also has the potential to become a strong two-way defenseman, which has seen him move up the rankings.

To start, Schairer already has NHL size. Few prospects have his 6-foot-3, 201-pound frame, and he has the skill set to match. Schairer is a great skater, able to work his edges, which allows him to close down passing lanes and shut down corners too. He has good gap control, good mobility, and can read the ice well, all the things teams are looking for in an NHL defenseman, and prospects often don’t figure out until three or four years after being drafted.

His long reach allows him to pick off passes that most players would have no business picking off. All of these abilities make him great against the rush. Offensively, Schairer moves confidently with the puck on his stick. He plays more of a support role in the offensive zone, but his hockey sense allows him to facilitate scoring chances.

Still, his offensive game is not developed enough to label him an offensive defenseman. His puck movement is very efficient, and he makes responsible passes, but not amazing ones, which is part of the reason he scored just nine points in 25 games with USNTDP Juniors. He could also improve his posture. He handles the puck slumped over slightly, which makes him look a tad shorter than when he is skating.

His draw is not his point production. It’s his combination of size, skating, and awareness in the defensive zone. His floor is very good, and his abilities project to be NHL-caliber. His game is comparable to Brett Pesce – a good defensive defenseman who plays the game through his intelligence and his size. I could see Schairer reaching Pesce’s offensive potential if he develops it at Boston College or in the American Hockey League.

If he can really improve his offensive game, Noah Hanifin should be a good comparison. Hanifin has a similar frame and is a vital part of the Vegas Golden Knights’ blue line.

Other THW Draft Profiles

NHL Draft Projection

I see Schairer going in the early second round, somewhere in the 40s. Some think he should go in the first round, while others have him going later in the second round. It’s unlikely he sees the third round, however.

The Florida Panthers could use him if they don’t draft a defenseman in the first round, either with pick 40 or 48. I could also see the Los Angeles Kings or Detroit Red Wings giving him a shot at 46 or 47.

Quotables

“His allure is definitely not his point-production, but the fact he exudes NHL tools (including amazing skating abilities and uncanny range) and hockey sense – he plays the role of puck-mover and offensive supporter/ facilitator right now, and would no doubt have more points on a better squad, but that’s not really his game. He’s a stalwart defensively, nicely physical, kills rushes, drives play through transition, and seems very poised and confident with the puck. I’m now a fan.” – Chris Ralph Shankara, Upside Hockey

“Luke Schairer is a defenseman who’s got clear NHL tools to go with his clear NHL size — he’s 6-foot-3 and 201 pounds at present. It’s very easy to watch him play and imagine him in the professional leagues, not because his talent is there yet, but because his skill set is very projectable.” – Hannah Stuart, Bleacher Report

Strengths

  • Already has NHL size, even for a defenseman
  • Excellent skating, gap control, and physicality
  • Great range with his stick
  • Great intelligence in the defensive zone

Under Construction/Improvements

  • Could improve his skating posture
  • Not very involved offensively, more simple than flashy
  • Not a very defined shot
  • High floor, lower ceiling

NHL Potential

Schairer should only need to spend a couple of seasons in minor/junior hockey before getting his call-up to the NHL. His defensive game translates well to the NHL, but his ceiling is questionable, especially given his limited offensive involvement.

As a result, he has a very high floor and a ceiling not far above it. He profiles to be a good second-pairing defenseman and an excellent third-pairing defenseman. He’ll be on the penalty kill, but power-play time will be limited unless he can develop his offensive game.
