Rankings

In one of the most competitive leagues outside the NHL, the 17-year-old defenseman stood out as a quality in-zone defenseman. He finally broke through HV071’s Swedish Hockey League (SHL) roster in his draft-eligible season. The best aspects of his game don’t show up on the stat sheet, but he is extremely intelligent defensively.

He has great gap control, patrolling passing lanes extremely well. He knows where to go to force turnovers in the neutral zone and his own zone, and he has the skating ability to make those plays. He is an aggressive rush defender, and it usually works.

His physicality is also superb. He stands at a towering 6-foot-4, and he uses his frame well, delivering bone-crushing hits down the middle. He isn’t overly aggressive, but he’s good at using his body at the right time. His physicality and intelligence make him a pest in the neutral zone and in his own zone.

With the puck on his stick, he’s skillful in baiting people in and getting the puck out of his zone on outlet passes.

He’s also shown incredible year-to-year development as well. The great edge work and physicality weren’t at the current level in 2024-25. He also improved in carrying the puck. He had a habit of carrying the puck into too much pressure and trust in his puck-handling a little too much last season, but he definitely got better in 2025-26.

Offensively, he’s pretty solid, but there are a few knocks to his game. His shot isn’t super developed, although that’s not as big of a deal for a defenseman like him. He’s probably not going to consistently score 20 goals a season like Cale Makar.

He’s also a reliable passer, but not an elite one. He had more of a role of passing the puck from his own zone to the neutral zone, although he did well carrying the puck through the neutral zone at times. He isn’t a player who will turn over the puck a ton, but he also won’t be super involved in the offensive zone either.

Still, there are flashes of him being a better two-way defenseman. He is great at positioning himself in opportunities to score. If a team can develop his slap shot, he has the skating ability and intelligence to become a great two-way defenseman. At this early juncture, though, he’ll be evaluated as more of a stay-at-home defenseman.

Gustafsson could be the highest-drafted player from HV-71 since Oskar Olausson, who was drafted 28th overall in the 2021 NHL draft. He could also be the first HV-71 defenseman drafted in the first round since Erik Brannstrom in 2017.

NHL Draft Projection/Team Fits

While some websites have Gustafsson in the mid-teens among the rankings, Gustafsson profiles as a mid-to-late first in the draft. NHL.com has the Buffalo Sabres taking Gustafsson to pair with Radim Mrkta. He and Finnish defenseman Juho Piiparinen will be close in draft slot, but Piiparinen’s game is better when simpler, at least offensively. Gustafsson, meanwhile, has the upside of being a two-way defenseman.

Along with the Sabres, the Utah Mammoth at 19th overall and the Washington Capitals at 21st overall make sense. The Mammoth have a lot of defensemen in their prospect pool, but a lot of them, like Dmitriy Simashev, should be NHL-ready next season. Meanwhile, the Capitals surprisingly don’t have much outside of Cole Hutson, who’s already in the NHL.

Quotables

“Gustafsson has made a smooth transition to the professional game. His skating speed and coordinated movement stand out for a 6-foot-4 defenseman, even at the SHL level. That mobility allows him to create passing lanes and exploit them with his strong hockey sense.” – Jacob Smeds, The Hockey News

“Gustafsson is equipped with high-end tools. His mobility, strength, and poise are all impressive, and he knows how to use his size and reach effectively. Gustafsson has moments where he blends these tools together with his puck handling ability to lead transitions for his team. His offensive game is still very raw but shows strong potential to develop over time, thanks to his strong instincts and an ability to process and execute skilled plays with pace. He needs become harder to play against, particularly by cleaning up his passive gap control at the blue line but those areas are expected to improve.” – Ethan Lindley, Dobber Prospects

“My shakiest viewings of him came outside the SHL oddly enough, with some skill issues controlling the puck and dealing with pressure, but once he got challenged in the best league in Europe, he really came alive. In terms of projectable defending, leading with stick checking and positioning, fading into physical pressure and separating bodies from the puck, Gustafsson might be the best at it in this class.” – Will Scouch, scouching.ca

Strengths

  • Great edge work, allowing him to keep up with wingers trying to enter the neutral zone
  • Awesome year-to-year development, improving his intelligence, puck-carrying, skating, and confidence in the offensive zone.
  • Extremely intelligent, positioning him well to make plays with his stick and body.
  • Perfect amount of physicality without overcommitting.
  • Held up as a 17-year-old in one of the most competitive non-NHL leagues. Also played more than 20 minutes a game.

Under Construction/Improvements

  • Sometimes over-aggressive and headstrong when carrying the puck, causing turnovers
  • Didn’t incorporate slap shot into his game as much as expected
  • Could grow footwork charging into the zone to become more of a two-way defenseman
  • Offensive zone playmaking ability not as visible at this moment
  • Can carry the puck into the neutral zone, but not as often as expected

NHL Potential

His NHL potential will depend on his growth in the offensive zone. He wasn’t asked to do a ton in the offensive zone in the SHL, but he has the skating ability to grow into a more well-rounded defenseman.

The analytics also show that in his own zone, he’s competent at positioning, but not truly elite. At the same time, he has flashes of being an elite defensive defenseman and even a quality two-way defenseman. Still, that will probably come in four to five years. He profiles as a defenseman that will finally put it all together at his age 23 or 24 season, although offensively that’s still to be determined.

Risk/Reward Analysis

Risk: 2/5, Reward: 4/5

Fantasy Hockey Potential

Offense: 5/10, Defense: 9/10

Awards/Achievements

Gustafsson played for Sweden at the 2024 World U-17 Hockey Challenge, getting a bronze medal. He also led his team to a silver medal at the 2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup.
