Maple Leafs Acquire Ersson, Andrae For Joseph Woll

With the NHL offseason officially underway, John Chayka and the Toronto Maple Leafs were the first ones to make a splash on the trade market moving goaltender Joseph Woll and defenceman Simon Benoit to the Philadelphia Flyers for a three-piece return.

In exchange, the Maple Leafs acquire goaltender Samuel Ersson, defenceman Emil Andrae and a third-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft – adding to their stock for the upcoming draft.

Flyers Acquire Woll, Benoit

Woll, who started the 2025-26 season on leave from the team, turns 28 later this summer and is coming off a tough season between the pipes for the Maple Leafs. He finished the season 15-16-7 in 39 games with a 3.34 goals against average (GAA) and .899 save percentage (SV%) – his worst season on an individual basis.

Over parts of five seasons with the Maple Leafs, Woll is 63-43-9 in 117 career regular season games with a 2.94 career GAA and .906 SV%, stepping up in some key moments for the team over the last couple of seasons.

The Flyers get two more seasons of Woll at a reasonable cap hit, who carries and annual average value (AAV) of just over $3.66 million through the 2027-28 season.

As for Benoit, he has one year left at $1.35 million. A heavy hitter, Benoit platooned the Maple Leafs blue line for parts of the last three seasons. Over that time, he accumulated two goals and 21 points in 215 regular season games. A depth option, Benoit was a role player during his time with the Maple Leafs and should land a similar role with the Flyers moving forward.

Maple Leafs Land Ersson, Andrae

As for what Chayka and the Maple Leafs got in exchange for their young goaltender, Ersson is a 26-year-old restricted free agent who is currently unsigned for the 2026-27 season. In parts of four seasons with the Flyers, he’s never posted a save percentage of over .900 or a goals against average lower than 2.82.

During the 2025-26 season, Ersson had a 14-11-5 record in 33 games with an .870 SV% and 3.12 GAA. He’s a big body at six-foot-three and 194 pounds, but with the organizational depth in net for the Maple Leafs, it’ll be interesting where he lands.

As for Andrae, the 24-year-old had 13 points in 61 games during the 2025-26 regular season. He averaged just over 15 minutes per game for the Flyers and, like Ersson, comes to the Maple Leafs as an unsigned restricted free agent.

Finally, maybe one of the more intriguing pieces of the trade, is the third-round pick in the upcoming draft. The Maple Leafs, who’ve had poor draft stock over the past number of years, will add another pick which could be used to move up in the draft or make a selection when it come time.

For now, the move opens up roughly $5 million in cap space for the Maple Leafs who will continue to look for ways to better the team heading into the 2026-27 season.
