New York Rangers Sign Oliver Bjorkstrand to 1-Year Deal

The New York Rangers have made another notable addition to their forward group, signing veteran winger Oliver Bjorkstrand to a one-year contract worth $4.5 million. The short-term deal gives the Rangers an experienced, versatile scoring winger without committing long-term cap space, while Bjorkstrand gets an opportunity to rebuild his value on a potential playoff contender after reaching unrestricted free agency.

For New York, the signing checks several boxes. Bjorkstrand has quietly established himself as one of the league’s more consistent two-way wingers over the past decade. Whether with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Seattle Kraken, or Tampa Bay Lightning, the Danish forward has built a reputation for responsible play away from the puck while providing secondary scoring and strong possession numbers.

Although his offensive production dipped during the 2025-26 season, recording 32 points in 80 games, the Rangers are betting that a change of scenery and a larger offensive role can help unlock more of the player who has multiple 20-plus goal seasons on his résumé.

A Perfect Fit for the Rangers’ Style

Bjorkstrand brings a skill set that should mesh well with New York’s lineup.

He’s a right-shot winger capable of playing throughout the top nine, giving head coach Mike Sullivan flexibility when constructing his forward combinations. His quick release makes him a constant scoring threat, while his ability to retrieve pucks and maintain offensive-zone possession complements more playmaking forwards.

The Rangers have relied heavily on their star players for offense in recent seasons. Adding Bjorkstrand gives them another proven NHL scorer who can ease some of that burden and strengthen their secondary attack.

Bjorkstrand also has experience on both the power play and penalty kill, giving New York another dependable option in multiple situations. His hockey IQ and defensive awareness have consistently made him a trusted player in close games.

Low Risk, High Reward

The one-year structure of the contract makes this an attractive gamble for both sides.

For the Rangers, there’s little long-term financial risk. If Bjorkstrand rebounds offensively, they’ll receive tremendous value from a $4.5 million investment. If he returns to producing at a 20-to-25-goal pace, the contract could quickly become one of the better-value signings of the offseason.

For Bjorkstrand, joining a potential playoff-caliber team provides an opportunity to showcase his abilities before returning to free agency next summer, potentially positioning himself for a longer, more lucrative contract.

His versatility should also prove valuable if injuries occur throughout the season, as he’s capable of moving up and down the lineup without significantly impacting team chemistry.

Rangers Continue to Add Depth

Rather than making a headline-grabbing splash, the Rangers have focused on improving the overall depth of their roster after missing the playoffs for the past two seasons.

Bjorkstrand may not generate the same attention as some of the marquee free agents, but his combination of experience, responsible two-way play, and offensive upside addresses an important need.

If he rediscovers his scoring touch while continuing to play reliable defensive hockey, the Rangers may have found one of free agency’s most-underrated additions.
