3 Free Agency Fits for Patrick Kane

One of the key free agents left on the open market this summer is one of the greatest players to ever play the game, Patrick Kane. He is coming off a tenure with the Detroit Red Wings, and while he may return there, it seems more likely that he is going to be joining a new team.

Kane, who is 37 years old, played 67 games with the Red Wings last season, where he scored 16 goals and added 41 assists for 57 points. Throughout his career, he has scored 508 goals and added 892 assists for 1400 points through 1369 games, maintaining just over a point-per-game average.

While there have likely been many teams around the league interested in signing Kane, his main focus will be on trying to win a Stanley Cup before he retires, which will play a huge role in choosing the next team he signs with.

However, there are some other options on the table for Kane, especially if he has a few more seasons left to play.

Buffalo Sabres

The first team that could make sense for Kane is his hometown Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres finally made a push to the playoffs last season and seem close to being true championship contenders, as they hope to build on a successful 2025-26 campaign.

One big issue for the Sabres is the fact that they lost Alex Tuch. Both Tuch and the Sabres tried to get a new deal done, but in the end, it wasn’t possible, and he was traded to the Washington Capitals. Now, the Sabres have to try and replace the overall production that was lost.

Kane is a veteran forward, Stanley Cup winner, and even at the age of 37, can be a solid contributor at both ends of the ice. He likely isn’t looking for a massive raise on his next contract, which benefits the Sabres, because if they can bring in a player with Kane’s pedigree on a short-term deal, they have a real chance at making a deep playoff run next season.

Chicago Blackhawks

This is one of the “other options on the table.”

The Blackhawks aren’t going to be serious contenders next season, but a reunion between the Blackhawks and Kane would be a perfect ending to his career. Kane does want to win, but if he wants to try to help the Blackhawks push for a championship and win again, where his career started, he could sign a three-year deal to finish off his career and be patient as they continue to build around him and their young phenom, Connor Bedard.

This idea seems like more of a stretch, but the Blackhawks do have the cap space to bring Kane in and extend Bedard long-term, so it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the two sides consider a reunion.

Edmonton Oilers

The Edmonton Oilers have done just about everything they needed to do this offseason, and they are serious contenders heading into the 2026-27 season, but they may still have one hole in their lineup.

The Oilers could benefit from acquiring another top-six forward, even though it could stop Isaac Howard from getting a larger role, and Kane could be the perfect addition.

Putting Kane beside Leon Draisaitl on the Oilers’ second line could end up being one of the most entertaining and creative duos the NHL has seen in a while, and adding more offensive depth is a must-have for the Oilers as they finally try to win a Stanley Cup with Connor McDavid.

Any of these three teams make a lot of sense to add Kane this offseason, but it seems as though he is willing to be patient as he considers where he will continue his playing career.
