OHL Week 2 Review

Team of the Week:

Mississauga Majors: The Majors went three for three in their games this weekend starting with a 6-4 win in Thursday’s showdown on the road against the Niagara IceDogs. Riley Brace led the way with a hat-trick spoiling the return of star Niagara defenseman Dougie Hamilton. The following night they returned home to face Owen Sound in a re-match of last year’s OHL championship and came out with a 5-3 victory before wrapping up the weekend with a 2-1 win over Kingston at the Hershey Centre. Mississauga sits atop the OHL standings with a perfect 5-0-0 record despite losing some key players from last year’s Memorial Cup squad.

Honorable Mention:

Guelph Storm: W 10-2 vs. Erie, W 5-3 @ Owen Sound
London Knights: W 8-2 vs. Sudbury, W 6-3 vs. Plymouth
Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds: W 6-1 @ Windsor, W 3-2 @ Kitchener

Player of the Week:

Sean Monahan, C, Ottawa 67’s: The Ottawa centre’s week started off with a two-goal performance in Friday’s 3-2 loss in Plymouth followed by a three-point effort in an 8-3 win over Saginaw. On Sunday afternoon he recorded another two points in the club’s 3-2 overtime loss against the Windsor Spitfires. For the week the Brampton native scored four goals and picked up three assists and is currently in third place in OHL scoring. A 1994 birthdate, Monohan is a draft-eligible player who is certain to see his stock rise if he continues to score at his current pace.

Honorable Mention:

Seth Griffth, London Knights: 2 GP, 2 G, 4 A, 6 pts
Nail Yakupov, Sarnia Sting: 2 GP, 2 G, 4 A, 6 pts
Riley Brace, Mississauga Majors: 3 GP, 5 G, 5 pts
Tanner Pearson, Barrie Colts: 3 GP, 6 A, 6 pts
Cody Ceci, Ottawa 67’s: 3 GP, 1 G, 4 A, 5 pts

Goalie of the Week:

Michael Houser: Houser stopped 31 out of 33 shots in the Knight’s 8-2 win over Sudbury and then bettered those numbers with 40 saves in a 6-3 victory against Plymouth. The 20-year-old is a perfect 4-0 on the season having allowed just six goals in those four games for the Knights who have started the season with four straight victories.

Honorable Mention:

Matt Murray, Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds: 2 GP, 2 W, 3 GA, 45 SV
Garret Sparks, Guelph Storm: 2 GP, 2 W, 5 GA, 61 SV
