Red Wings’ Dylan Larkin’s 3-Team Trade Wish List Revealed

The NHL offseason received a major jolt when reports surfaced that Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin had officially requested a trade after another disappointing season in Hockeytown. After 10 consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance, the longest active drought in the NHL, it appears the frustration has finally reached a breaking point for the franchise cornerstone. Reports indicate Larkin’s list of acceptable destinations is just three teams long: the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, and Vegas Golden Knights.

That short list puts pressure on Red Wings general manager (GM) Steve Yzerman, who now has limited leverage in negotiations. Larkin owns a full no-trade clause and ultimately controls where his future lies.

At 29 years old and under contract through 2030-31 with an $8.7 million cap hit, Larkin remains one of the league’s premier two-way centers. He recorded 67 points in 74 games during the 2025-26 season and continues to provide elite speed, strong faceoff ability, leadership, and 30-goal scoring consistency.

Florida Panthers: Adding Another Championship Piece

The Panthers have become one of the NHL’s model organizations over the past several seasons. Even after injuries derailed their attempt at another Stanley Cup run, they still possess a veteran core capable of contending immediately.

Larkin would give the Panthers something they have lacked behind Aleksander Barkov: another legitimate top-line center capable of driving offense. His speed would fit perfectly with Florida’s aggressive transition game, and his ability to play heavy minutes would lessen the burden on Barkov.

There’s also an obvious connection through Team USA. Larkin and Matthew Tkachuk have developed chemistry through international competition, and joining a proven winner could provide exactly the fresh start Larkin is seeking.

The biggest challenge for Panthers GM Bill Zito would be constructing a package that satisfies Detroit. Trading within the Atlantic Division is never easy, and the Red Wings would undoubtedly demand a premium return. Florida’s prospect pool isn’t among the league’s deepest, meaning significant roster decisions could be necessary.

Still, if there’s one thing Florida has proven over recent years, it’s that they are willing to sacrifice future assets to maximize their championship window.

Minnesota Wild: The Most Natural Fit

Of the three destinations, Minnesota may be the cleanest fit both on and off the ice.

Wild GM Bill Guerin already has a strong relationship with Larkin from Team USA, where the Detroit captain played a major role during international tournaments. Minnesota has aggressively pushed its chips toward the center of the table in recent years and has made it clear that winning now is the priority.

Larkin would instantly give the Wild another elite center and provide head coach John Hynes with tremendous flexibility throughout the lineup. His speed and defensive responsibility would complement stars such as Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy, while his leadership qualities would fit seamlessly inside Minnesota’s culture.

The Wild also appear to possess the assets necessary to make a serious offer. Unlike Florida, Minnesota can offer a combination of prospects and roster players that could help Detroit remain competitive immediately rather than beginning a lengthy rebuild.

For Larkin personally, Minnesota checks several boxes. It keeps him in the Midwest, away from a divisional rival, and places him on a team that has shown a willingness to make bold moves to chase a Stanley Cup.

Among the three teams reportedly on his list, Minnesota may ultimately make the most sense.

Vegas Golden Knights: The NHL’s Ultimate Wild Card

Whenever a superstar becomes available, the Golden Knights seem to emerge as contenders. Whether they possess the cap space or not almost feels irrelevant. GM Kelly McCrimmon has repeatedly found ways to bring elite talent to Las Vegas, and few organizations are as aggressive as the Golden Knights.

Larkin alongside Jack Eichel would immediately give Vegas one of the strongest center duos in hockey. His speed would fit the Golden Knights’ fast-paced attack, while his defensive awareness would make him valuable in every situation. Few players in the league can match his combination of skating ability, offensive production, and penalty-killing effectiveness.

The financial aspect, however, remains complicated. Vegas already faces difficult decisions with several key players, and adding another $8.7 million cap hit would require significant maneuvering. Players would almost certainly need to move out to make the numbers work.

But history has taught the hockey world one thing: never count out Vegas. The Golden Knights have consistently found ways to land elite players, and another blockbuster wouldn’t surprise anyone.

A Difficult Situation for Detroit

While Larkin’s three-team list creates excitement around the league, it presents a difficult challenge for Yzerman. Detroit isn’t interested in tearing everything down. The organization still wants to compete and would prefer hockey trades involving current NHL talent rather than simply collecting draft picks.

The limited number of destinations reduces Detroit’s leverage and could force the Red Wings into accepting less than full market value. Still, teams across the NHL recognize what Larkin brings.

He’s a captain, a leader, a proven scorer, and one of the fastest players in the league. Those types of centers rarely become available. Whether he ends up in Florida, Minnesota, or Vegas, one thing is clear: Larkin’s trade request has instantly become the biggest storyline of the NHL offseason.
