NHL fans league-wide were caught off guard by a trade request from Dylan Larkin earlier this offseason, and it seemed as though the two sides were heading towards a breakup.
However, there have been no updates since then, other than Larkin only giving three teams that he would be willing to waive his trade protection for: the Vegas Golden Knights, Florida Panthers, and Minnesota Wild.

Larkin is the current captain of the Red Wings and is coming off a solid campaign, while being a solid all-around contributor. Last season, he scored 34 goals and added 33 assists for 67 points through 74 games.

In a recent article from Ansar Khan, it was revealed that Larkin had expanded his trade list to four teams, now including the Dallas Stars.
Khan writes, “Larkin recently added the Dallas Stars to his original list that included only Florida, Minnesota and Vegas.” Khan also mentioned that the addition of the Stars likely doesn’t make it any easier to move Larkin, writing, “…it’s probably not going to get him any closer to being dealt by Detroit Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman.”
Supposedly, the Red Wings had an astronomical ask in return for Larkin from the Stars. Khan wrote, “The Red Wings had talks with the Stars, and according to a league source, asked for young center Wyatt Johnston in return. It doesn’t hurt to ask, but there was no chance of that happening.”
Apparently, the Stars offered Jason Robertson to the Red Wings for Larkin, but that would be a tough deal to work out. Khan alluded to that, writing, “The Stars offered Jason Robertson, but there are a couple of hurdles to that potential deal.” He continued, “For starters, Robertson, a restricted free agent who filed for arbitration, would have to agree to a long-term deal with the Red Wings. Despite his fringe ties to metro Detroit, there is no reason to believe he would do that.”
On top of all of this, Robertson already rejected a massive extension offer in a potential sign-and-trade with the Seattle Kraken, which topped $15 million annually, and while Robertson may have rejected simply because he doesn’t wanna play for the Kraken, it’s hard to believe the Red Wings would be willing to come anywhere close to that deal.
Stars & Red Wings Don’t Seem Like Logical Trade Partners
While Larkin makes sense as a fit for the Stars, especially if they end up losing Robertson in some way, there doesn’t seem to be much of a fit between the Stars and Red Wings in terms of being logical trade partners.
The Red Wings are asking for too much in return while not being open to paying Robertson what he is worth if he’s the one coming back in return, while the Stars don’t need to add Larkin if their original plan is to extend Robertson anyway.
The Golden Knights and Wild seem like more logical fits for Larkin at this point, considering they have a little more flexibility with both what they’re willing to offer and how he would fit into their respective lineups.
If Larkin wants to be traded, he’s going to have to expand his trade list a bit, and Yzerman is going to have to be willing to bend a little in negotiations. If not, we could see Larkin starting the 2026-27 campaign as a member of the Red Wings.
