Canadiens May Have Found Another Late-Round Steal in Luke Mittelstadt

The Montreal Canadiens have spent the last few years building one of the NHL’s most promising groups of young defensemen. With Lane Hutson already establishing himself as a star and several other talented blueliners making their way through the organization, Montreal’s future on the back end looks bright. However, another name is beginning to attract attention, and it might not be one that many fans expected. Luke Mittelstadt, a seventh-round selection in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft, has been absolutely sensational to begin the 2026-27 season with the Laval Rocket. While it remains early, his performances are making him one of the most intriguing prospects in the Canadiens’ system. Mittelstadt Is on Fire to Start the Season Few players in the American Hockey League (AHL) have enjoyed a better start to the season than Mittelstadt. In fact, at the time of writing, nobody has been more productive. Through his first six games with the Rocket, the 23-year-old defenseman has recorded an impressive 13 points, leading not only Laval in scoring but the entire AHL. Averaging more than two points per game as a defenseman is remarkable, regardless of the level of competition. What makes his performance even more interesting is his relatively limited professional experience. Selected 197th overall by Montreal in the 2023 NHL Draft, Mittelstadt spent four seasons playing college hockey at the University of Minnesota before making the jump to the professional ranks. He joined the Rocket toward the end of last season, appearing in nine games before preparing for his first full professional campaign. Now, just a few games into that first full season, Mittelstadt is already making a significant impression. Of course, maintaining this kind of offensive production over an entire AHL season would be extremely difficult. Nobody should expect him to continue averaging more than two points per game. However, even if his production slows considerably, his early success suggests that the Canadiens might have found something interesting with their late-round selection. For a player drafted in the seventh round, simply becoming a legitimate NHL prospect would already represent an excellent return on investment. Another Promising Defenseman in Montreal’s System One thing the Canadiens certainly haven’t lacked in recent years is talented young defensemen. Hutson is obviously the biggest success story. The former second-round selection has quickly established himself as one of the NHL’s most exciting offensive blueliners and a cornerstone of Montreal’s future. The organization also previously had Logan Mailloux, another promising offensive defenseman, before trading him to the St. Louis Blues in the deal that brought Zachary Bolduc to Montreal. Meanwhile, David Reinbacher and Adam Engström have continued progressing through the organization, with both currently part of the Canadiens’ NHL roster. Add players like Kaiden Guhle, Noah Dobson and Arber Xhekaj, and it becomes clear that Montreal already has an impressive foundation on defense. That’s what makes Mittelstadt’s emergence particularly interesting. Unlike Reinbacher, who was selected fifth overall in 2023, Mittelstadt arrived with considerably less attention and expectations. He wasn’t viewed as one of the organization’s premier prospects, and his path toward the NHL was always going to be more challenging. However, development isn’t always predictable. Sometimes, players selected in the later rounds outperform expectations and force organizations to reconsider their potential. It’s far too early to suggest Mittelstadt will become another Hutson, but his offensive abilities are certainly worth monitoring. For the Canadiens, having another promising defenseman developing in Laval is an excellent problem to have. Could Mittelstadt Earn an NHL Opportunity or Become a Trade Chip? The biggest question surrounding Mittelstadt might not necessarily be his offensive abilities, but rather where he fits into Montreal’s long-term plans.…
