USA Hockey has named 29 players to the women’s national team off-ice camp, slated to take place in Colorado Springs, Colorado in June.
The roster features 11 players from the National Women’s Hockey League (NWHL), which is staking a growing presence on the U.S. national team roster. That number could grow before the camp takes place, with draft picks like Alex Carpenter, Hannah Brandt and Kendall Coyne possibilities to join the NWHL before the end of NWHL free agency, which extends through July 31.
The roster includes Boston Pride defenseman Gigi Marvin, who was left off the roster for the 2016 World Championship where the U.S. won gold in an overtime thriller against Canada. Stephanie Anderson is also on the roster. She was removed from the World Championship roster due to surgery for appendicitis in March.
One notable omission is University of Minnesota star Amanda Kessel, who came back late in the season to help the Gophers win another national championship and has since signed the richest contract in NWHL history with the New York Riveters.
During a conference call this month Kessel said she had been talking with USA Hockey, but that her status was still up in the air.
The off-ice camp takes place from June 1 to 5 at U.S. Olympic Training Center, and is predominantly focused on off-ice work outs, mental skills and nutrition.
