It was not long ago when the entire hockey world was split between those that thought Chris Pronger would become an absolute force on the Flyers’ blueline and those who thought the organization overpaid for an older, over-the-hill sloth of a defenseman. More controversy followed when Flyers’ GM Paul Holmgren locked the future Hall-of-Famer up until the age of 42.
With just under a month until the official NHL Trade Deadline, all of the speculations involving one of the biggest players on the market, Ilya Kovalchuk, came to a dramatic conclusions.

It’s been a slow road back to recovery for the Flyers who, after starting 12-5-1, went on a disastrous streak of 3-13-1 sending them on a free-fall from the heights of the Eastern Conference back to the league basement. With three road wins in a row in front of Michael Leighton of all goalies, they have pulled themselves back to an even 18-18-2, but have they completely recovered?
With four seconds left in the first period of a home game against Buffalo on Friday, November 27th, the Philadelphia Flyers scored their second goal of the game to take the 2-1 lead.
Since that time the team has played just over 160 minutes of hockey and taken 95 shots on opposing netminders. They started off against Ryan Miller, faced Johan Hedberg in Atlanta, and took on Roberto Luongo at home last night. It has been roughly a week since the team has scored a single goal.
It’s easy to look at the Flyers’ early season success and give all of the credit to players like Chris Pronger, Ray Emery, and James vanRiemsdyk who are all having great first seasons with the organization. It’s even easier to drop the usual names like Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, and Kimmo Timonen who have obviously had a hand in the Flyers’ winning ways for a couple of years now.
With early injuries and a rough schedule to contend with, the Flyers got off to a somewhat sloppy start. With five straight wins in hand though, things are definitely looking up for the orange and black.

While the majority of the world is wrapped up in a major economic crisis, things for the NHL are actually looking up. It isn’t that the league is making a gigantic profit while everything around them falls apart, but for the most part, the NHL is steadily growing in support.
The Flyers already had the most difficult and rigorous opening month scheduled among all NHL teams going into the season. Nine of their eleven games were against 2008-09 playoff teams, and when added to the most bizarre scheduling the team had seen in years, it has made for some hard times.
Some things never change. Penguins fans will always claim that the Flyers are a bunch of goons, and Flyers fans will always claim that the Penguins are a bunch of cheaters. There’s always little bit of truth as well as a bit of exaggeration from both sides no matter what the argument, but things took an even more interesting turn last Thursday during Philadelphia’s home loss to their in-state rival.
