Fisher’s 8th Annual NHL Mock Draft: 2019, Round 7

For the seventh and final round, I did things a little differently this year since I was working strictly from my top 217 rankings.

I wanted to get all 217 of those prospects drafted this time around, whereas in years past I’ve went with gut feelings in the final round and gravitated towards taking kids that I’m personally high on from my scouting region in British Columbia and Western Canada — particularly the WHL.

The way it worked out, I was left with a lot of overagers, but I still managed to match them quite well to teams. Of the 31 selections in this round, 19 are overagers — accounting for 19 of my 42 total overagers in this year’s mock, which is right around the annual average in recent years.

Following the seventh round, you’ll find a list of honourable mentions from my top 350 rankings as well as all the other prospects on my radar — more than 1,100 additional names of potential interest to NHL teams, totalling nearly 1,500 draft-eligibles for 2019.

Worth noting, my big list does not include any of the re-entries, the previously drafted prospects who were not signed by the June 1 deadline — some of whom will be eligible to get selected again in 2019:

For me, with that many prospects to consider mocking, the seventh round is every bit as fun as the first round.

Thanks for following along and enjoy this finale, with the Senators first up as we head into the homestretch.

Seventh Round

187) Ottawa Senators — Martin Lang (LW, Czech Republic, Kamloops WHL)

Height/Weight: 5-foot-11, 172 pounds

Playoff Stats: 6 GP-1 G-3 A-4 PTS

Regular Season Stats: 65 GP-11 G-22 A-33 PTS

Central Scouting: Not Ranked

THW Larry Fisher: 179

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: 148

ANALYSIS: The Senators close out a sensational draft by taking a chance on this young Czech — Lang is the youngest prospect available in 2019, born right on the Sept. 15 cut-off date. The upside is significant — not quite Martin Havlat level, but certainly a potential steal here. Lang can really shoot the puck, a budding sniper who should break out in the Dub next season.

188) Los Angeles Kings — Matt Brown (F, USA, Des Moines USHL, overager)

Height/Weight: 5-foot-9, 181 pounds

Playoff Stats: 5 GP-4 G-2 A-6 PTS

Regular Season Stats: 57 GP-30 G-27 A-57 PTS

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: The Kings use their final selection on a high-scoring American forward in Brown, who looked like a legit talent at the World Junior A Challenge. No relation to Dustin Brown and a very different player, this undersized Brown has produced at every level and could be another offensive catalyst for L.A.’s future.

189) New Jersey Devils — Filip Cederqvist (LW/RW, Sweden, Växjö SHL, overager)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-1, 187 pounds

Playoff Stats: 6 GP-1 G-0 A-1 PTS (SHL)

Regular Season Stats: 33 GP-4 G-4 A-8 PTS (SHL), 26 GP-14 G-18 A-32 PTS (SuperElit-J20)

ANALYSIS: The Devils go back to Sweden for another overager, deciding on Cederqvist over Carl Jakobsson in a coin flip between those two. New Jersey previously took Samuel Fagemo as a Swedish overager in the second round of my mock and now finishes off with Cederqvist in hopes of getting a couple forwards who can contribute sooner than later.

190) Detroit Red Wings — Ilya Mironov (LD, Russia, Loko Yaroslavl MHL)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-3, 198 pounds

Playoff Stats: 10 GP-1 G-1 A-2 PTS (MHL)

Regular Season Stats: 36 GP-1 G-5 A-6 PTS (MHL), 2 GP-1 G-0 A-1 PTS (NMHL)

Central Scouting: 35 EUS

THW Larry Fisher: 155

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: 112

ANALYSIS: The Red Wings complete their Russian Five here, with Mironov joining fellow defender Artemi Knyazev and forwards Vasili Podkolzin, Ilya Nikolayev and Yegor Chinakhov. That is a lot of Russians, admittedly, but also a ton of talent. Steve Yzerman could do a lot worse in his first draft back in Detroit as GM.

Mironov stood out at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup but didn’t have a great draft year back in Russia — at least not statistically — so it’s tough to say where he’ll go. Mironov has a nice package of size and skill, so he could be another steal if he’s still available in the final round. But, because of that enticing package, it wouldn’t be shocking to see Mironov selected as high as the third round.

191) Buffalo Sabres — Matej Blumel (LW, Czech Republic, Waterloo USHL, overager)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-0, 198 pounds

Playoff Stats: 4 GP-3 G-1 A-4 PTS

Regular Season Stats: 58 GP-30 G-30 A-60 PTS

Central Scouting: 150 NAS

THW Larry Fisher: 208

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: The Sabres drafted a Czech forward out of the USHL last year in Matej Pekar and he’s trending nicely for a fourth-rounder — now in the OHL — so perhaps Buffalo circles back there for Blumel, who broke out in a big way after getting passed over last year following his North American debut. Now fully adjusted, Blumel is bound for the University of Connecticut to continue his development next season. This wouldn’t be a bad pick to end things off for Buffalo.

192) Boston Bruins (from N.Y. Rangers) — Karel Plasek (LW/RW, Czech Republic, Kometa Brno Czech, overager)

Height/Weight: 5-foot-11, 154 pounds

Playoff Stats: 5 GP-1 G-0 A-1 PTS (Czech)

Regular Season Stats: 29 GP-2 G-4 A-6 PTS (Czech), 4 GP-1 G-2 A-3 PTS (Czech2), 10 GP-10 G-5 A-15 PTS (Czech U19)

Central Scouting: 43 EUS

THW Larry Fisher: 200

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: Again, there was much debate at Boston’s table with so many tempting Czech forwards still on the board for this final pick. After taking Zdenek Sedlak at the end of the sixth round, the Bruins’ brass decided to go with another overager here in Plasek, who probably should have been drafted last year. Plasek’s skill level won out over fellow overagers Lukas Rousek and WHL import Krystof Hrabik. Boston’s decision came down to those three, but first-time eligibles Jan Bambula, Filip Koffer, Martin Beranek, Premysl Svoboda, Marek Berka, Jan Bernovsky and QMJHL import Filip Prikryl were all Czechs worthy of consideration.

193) Edmonton Oilers — Jere Innala (LW, Finland, HPK Liiga, overager)

Height/Weight: 5-foot-9, 172 pounds

Playoff Stats: 18 GP-2 G-9 A-11 PTS

Regular Season Stats: 60 GP-24 G-21 A-45 PTS

Central Scouting: 82 EUS

THW Larry Fisher: 202

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: The Oilers deployed a strategy in this year’s mock of selecting older forwards and they stay that course with their final pick in Innala — their third overager following Brett Leason in the second round and Taro Jentzsch in the sixth round. Edmonton is hopeful that those three can push for NHL roles sooner than later, adding some much-needed depth to the pipeline of forward prospects. Innala’s numbers in the Liiga suggest he could be challenging as early as next season, but it’s hard to say for sure with his size and the sometimes difficult adjustment to the North American game. This pick was between Innala and fellow Finnish overager Joonas Oden, who broke out and continued to come on strong throughout this season to also force his way onto the draft radar.

194) Chicago Blackhawks (from Anaheim) — Ivan Drozdov (RW/LW, Belarus, Dinamo Minsk KHL, overager)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-0, 174 pounds

Playoff Stats: N/A, 5 GP-4 G-3 A-7 PTS (WJC-20, D1A)

Regular Season Stats: 47 GP-1 G-7 A-8 PTS

THW Larry Fisher: 212

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: Chicago dives into the overager pool for Drozdov, with the Blackhawks selecting a Belarusian buddy for their fifth-rounder Evgeny Oxentyuk. Drozdov is further along in his development — more of a complete player — and thus could serve as a mentor for the promising Oxentyuk.

195) Vancouver Canucks — Artur Gatiyatov (F, Kazakhstan, Snezhnye Barsy Astana MHL, overager)

Height/Weight: 5-foot-7, 130 pounds

Playoff Stats: 4 GP-1 G-0 A-1 PTS

Regular Season Stats: 58 GP-24 G-42 A-66 PTS

Central Scouting: Not Ranked

THW Larry Fisher: 189

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: The Canucks jump on the overager bandwagon with Gatiyatov, who became something of a sensation in B.C. during this year’s World Juniors. Gatiyatov is small, but he makes things happen as a fun forward to watch. Vancouver took a similar overager in last year’s sixth round with Artem Manukyan, so I could totally see the Canucks gambling on Gatiyatov this year.

196) Philadelphia Flyers — David Kvasnicka (LD, Czech Republic, Plzen, overager)

Height/Weight: 5-foot-10, 185 pounds

Playoff Stats: N/A, 5 GP-1 G-2 A-3 PTS (WJC-20)

Central Scouting: Not Ranked

THW Larry Fisher: 192

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: The Flyers also select an overager who was impactful at this year’s World Juniors, where Kvasnicka was quarterbacking the Czech’s power play and logging big minutes. Kvasnicka isn’t big, but he’s a smooth defender who really looked like a player during that tournament.

197) Minnesota Wild — Grigori Dronov (LD, Russia, Metallurg Magnitogorsk KHL, overager)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-2, 207 pounds

Playoff Stats: 4 GP-0 G-1 A-1 PTS

Regular Season Stats: 16 GP-2 G-3 A-5 PTS

Central Scouting: Not Ranked

THW Larry Fisher: 215

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: The Wild close out their draft with Dronov, one of the older prospects available in 2019 as a defenceman with plenty of KHL experience who could step into Minnesota’s lineup in a years’ time, for 2020-21, once his contract ends. The Wild are already waiting for a few Russian reinforcements — most notably, star forward Kirill Kaprizov, whose KHL contract also concludes after next season — so Dronov could be on the same plane ride to Minnesota if this pick comes to fruition.

198) Tampa Bay Lightning (from Chicago) — Nikita Rtishchev (RW, Russia, Zvezda Moskva VHL, overager)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-1, 192 pounds

Playoff Stats: 3 GP-0 G-0 A-0 PTS (KHL), 8 GP-1 G-1 A-2 PTS (VHL), 1 GP-1 G-0 A-1 PTS (MHL)

Regular Season Stats: 13 GP-1 G-0 A-1 PTS (KHL), 41 GP-11 G-9 A-20 PTS (VHL)

Central Scouting: Not Ranked

THW Larry Fisher: 187

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: The Lightning land a higher-ceiling Russian in Rtishchev, who could be their next Nikita Gusev. Remember, Gusev was originally a seventh-round pick for Tampa Bay in 2012. Rtishchev has that level of raw skill, but he’ll take a fair bit of time to develop as a boom-or-bust prospect. This is one of those picks that Tampa makes now and we’ll hear more about in a few years.

199) Florida Panthers — Joonas Oden (F, Finland/USA, KooKoo Liiga, overager)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-0, 183 pounds

Playoff Stats: N/A

Regular Season Stats: 20 GP-5 G-6 A-11 PTS (Liiga), 44 GP-18 G-23 A-41 PTS (U20-Liiga)

Central Scouting: Not Ranked

THW Larry Fisher: 203

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: Innala would have been a consideration here too — I considered flipping those two Finns, Innala and Oden — but Innala may be redundant for Florida, which already owns the rights to similar prospect Henrik Haapala, who will be back in Finland playing for KHL Jokerit next season. Oden’s skill-set might translate better to North America than those other two, so the Panthers are happy with how my mock worked out.

200) Arizona Coyotes — Henry Rybinski (LW/RW, Canada, Seattle WHL)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-1, 170 pounds

Playoff Stats: 6 GP-0 G-2 A-2 PTS (WHL)

Regular Season Stats: 47 GP-8 G-32 A-40 PTS (WHL), 9 GP-1 G-11 A-12 PTS (BCHL)

Central Scouting: 123 NAS

THW Larry Fisher: 180

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: The Coyotes finish with Rybinski, who had a strong finish to his draft year and could rise into the higher rounds as a result. Arizona could be the team to take that reach, but Rybinski has a decent chance of becoming a steal here in the final round as a kid capable of putting up big numbers during his draft-plus-one campaign — and perhaps as a pro down the road too.

201) Philadelphia Flyers (from Montreal) — David Aubrecht (LD, Czech Republic, Bili Tygri Liberec U19, overager)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-1, 174 pounds

Playoff Stats: 4 GP-0 G-0 A-0 PTS (Czech U19)

Central Scouting: Not Ranked

THW Larry Fisher: 213

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: Philadelphia takes another over-age Czech defender, but that passport is about the only thing that Kvasnicka and Aubrecht have in common. Aubrecht is a rugged rearguard like current Flyer and fellow Czech Radko Gudas. Aubrecht was a standout at the World Junior A Challenge despite not recording any points in a shutdown role. He’ll never be an offensive producer from the blue line like Kvasnicka, but Aubrecht will be that physical presence that teams still need on the back end in order to win.

202) Colorado Avalanche — David Aebischer (RD, Switzerland, Gatineau QMJHL)

Height/Weight: 5-foot-11, 183 pounds

Playoff Stats: 5 GP-0 G-3 A-3 PTS

Regular Season Stats: 59 GP-4 G-24 A-28 PTS

Central Scouting: Not Ranked

THW Larry Fisher: 165

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: No known relation to the former Avs goaltender by the same name from the same country — who was also a late-round pick, a sixth-rounder back in 1997 — this Aebischer is a smooth defender who turned heads at this year’s World Juniors in helping Switzerland reach the semifinals before losing to Russia in the bronze-medal game. This Aebischer also made a fairly smooth transition to North America, producing pretty impressive stat-lines for a rookie import during his draft year. Colorado should be considering this prospect for the name connection alone — so Avalanche fans could dust off their old Aebischer jerseys — but, all kidding aside, this Aebischer could also have a career ahead of him.

203) Pittsburgh Penguins (from Vegas) — Valeri Orekhov (LD, Kazakhstan, Barys Astana KHL, overager)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-1, 190 pounds

Playoff Stats: 11 GP-0 G-2 A-2 PTS (KHL)

Regular Season Stats: 41 GP-3 G-3 A-6 PTS (KHL), 2 GP-1 G-1 A-2 PTS (MHL)

Central Scouting: Not Ranked

THW Larry Fisher: 190

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: Next to Gatiyatov, Orekhov emerged as the biggest revelation for Kazakhstan during this year’s World Juniors, contributing five assists over six games. Orekhov is a really steady defender with two near-full KHL seasons under his belt before his 20th birthday, making significant strides in that pro league. Pittsburgh doesn’t have a lot of defence prospects knocking on the door or even at the AHL level, so a double-overager like Orekhov could be appealing to the Penguins.

204) Toronto Maple Leafs (from Dallas) — Albert Lyckasen (RD, Sweden, Linköping J20)

Height/Weight: 5-foot-11, 187 pounds

Playoff Stats: 5 GP-0 G-0 A-0 PTS (SuperElit-J20), 3 GP-0 G-1 A-1 PTS (Allsvenskan-J18)

Regular Season Stats: 44 GP-7 G-9 A-16 PTS (SuperElit-J20), 5 GP-1 G-4 A-5 PTS (Elit-J18)

Central Scouting: 93 EUS

THW Larry Fisher: 186

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: The Leafs have taken Swedish defenders with their first-rounders the past two years — those being Rasmus Sandin and Timothy Liljegren — but Lyckasen would be more of a long-term project like 2015 fourth-rounder Jesper Lindgren. There are some similarities between those two — Lyckasen and Lindgren — and with right defence being such an organizational weakness, Toronto may as well throw a late-round dart at that specific position. Lyckasen could surprise in the years to come.

205) New York Rangers (from Columbus) — Amir Miftakhov (G, Russia, Bars Kazan VHL, overager)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-0, 172 pounds

Playoff Stats: N/A

Regular Season Stats: 33 GP-2.40 GAA-.919 SaveP (VHL), 2 GP-2.38 GAA-.921 SaveP (MHL)

Central Scouting: 8 EUG

THW Larry Fisher: 194

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: The Rangers don’t really need another goaltending prospect, but if Miftakhov lingers this long, they probably couldn’t pass him up with their final pick. Especially not with the success that the Rangers are having with Russian goaltenders right now. Alexandar Georgiev excelled last season in his first full NHL campaign, pushing Henrik Lundqvist for playing time as a 23-year-old rookie, while fellow 23-year-old Igor Shesterkin is now signed for next season and widely considered one of the top goaltending prospects outside the NHL. The Rangers also selected another Swede in Olof Lindbom in last year’s second round, with Adam Huska and Brandon Halverson still in their system possessing NHL upside, so their goaltending should be in good hands for the foreseeable future beyond the 37-year-old Lundqvist, whose contract has two seasons left.

It’s an impressive pipeline, but Miftakhov is an impressive prospect too. He was presumably passed over for size concerns last year, but Georgiev is essentially the same size, so the Rangers wouldn’t be scared off by that — and Miftakhov’s stats are certainly draft worthy over the past two seasons.

206) Montreal Canadiens (from Winnipeg) — Matias Mäntykivi (LC, Finland, SaiPa U20)

Height/Weight: 5-foot-11, 159 pounds

Playoff Stats: 13 GP-1 G-5 A-6 PTS (Mestis)

Regular Season Stats: 6 GP-1 G-0 A-1 PTS (Liiga), 11 GP-0 G-4 A-4 PTS (Mestis), 34 GP-12 G-24 A-36 PTS (U20-Liiga), 9 GP-7 G-6 A-13 PTS (U18-Sarja)

Central Scouting: 122 EUS

THW Larry Fisher: 205

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: 135

ANALYSIS: Montreal has been tapping into the market of Finnish forwards in recent years — selecting Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jesse Ylonen with its top two picks in 2018 and Joni Ikonen in the 2017 second round — and those returns are promising thus far. Mäntykivi is more of a long-shot, more of a long-term project, but he’s got a fair bit of promise and potential too. There is certainly some offensive upside in Mäntykivi’s skill-set, so the Canadiens would be wise to take a chance on him to close out their draft.

If not Mäntykivi, or if he’s gone by here, Montreal might also consider fellow Finnish forwards Wiljami Myllyla, Mikko Petman, Aleks Haatanen, Aarne Intonen, Konsta Hirvonen and Valtteri Ojantakanen as first-time eligibles still available in my mock. Linus Nyman and Jerry Turkulainen could be options as other Finnish overagers too.

207) Pittsburgh Penguins — Alex Yakovenko (LD, Russia/Kazakhstan, Muskegon USHL, overager)

Height/Weight: 5-foot-10, 170 pounds

Playoff Stats: 8 GP-0 G-5 A-5 PTS

Regular Season Stats: 56 GP-19 G-33 A-52 PTS

Central Scouting: 107 NAS

THW Larry Fisher: 214

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: Yakovenko, who has represented Russia rather than Kazakhstan in international play to date, is even older than Orekhov as a triple-overager — a rare exception to the age-eligibility rule as a 1998-born prospect who did play part of last season in North America. However, it appears the ruling is Yakovenko didn’t play enough on this side of the pond — he played a combined 35 games back home in Russia, then a combined 34 games in the USHL during the 2017-18 campaign. Talk about a technicality, but Yakovenko made the most of his extra year by dominating throughout his first full USHL season to garner draft interest as a now 21-year-old. Yakovenko has since signed to play pro in Finland next season — for Jukurit in the Liiga — but he could be on Pittsburgh’s radar for the same reasons as Orekhov, with an AHL opportunity in his near future.

208) Toronto Maple Leafs — Carl Jakobsson (LW/RW, Sweden, Färjestad SHL, overager)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-2, 165 pounds

Playoff Stats: 8 GP-0 G-0 A-0 PTS (SHL)

ANALYSIS: The Leafs also like their Swedish forwards in the later rounds — Andreas Johnsson was a seventh-round steal in 2013 and Pierre Engvall, their 2014 seventh-rounder, has a chance to play too — so it’s a reasonable bet that Toronto will take at least one in wrapping up their draft. Predicting which one it will be — which Swedish forward in the seventh round — is the challenging part.

Jakobsson wound up being my guess here, but first-time eligibles Arvid Costmar, Max Wahlgren and Jacob Grönhagen also would have been good guesses. Less likely, in my opinion, but still worth mentioning would be four Swedes already developing in North America — those being Travis Treloar, another first-time eligible, and overagers Andre Lee, Gabriel Seger and Hugo Leufvenius. It’s a long list, but Jakobsson was topping it for me — for Toronto.

209) New York Islanders — Kirill Tyutyayev (F, Russia, Avto Yekaterinburg MHL, overager)

ANALYSIS: The Islanders select a second straight Russian forward to finish their draft, with Tyutyayev following sixth-rounder Arseni Gritsyuk. Both have nice offensive upside as boom-or-bust types. Tyutyayev is small but has put up some really big numbers, which speaks to his big-time skill. The Islanders have been willing to take riskier Russians in recent years, including 2018 second-rounder Ruslan Iskhakov and 2016 fourth-rounder Anatoly Golyshev, who are both trending well as legit prospects.

210) Nashville Predators — Wiljami Myllyla (F, Finland, HIFK U20)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-0, 157 pounds

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: Like Mäntykivi before him, Myllyla could have a high ceiling. And like Montreal and Toronto, Nashville could be debating between several Finnish and Swedish forwards for its final pick. All the same ones that have already been mentioned could be of interest to the Predators, who might be more inclined to take one of the Swedes developing in North America — Treloar, Lee or Seger in particular. Costmar, Wahlgren and Grönhagen were strong candidates here again, along with Petman and Haatanen, but I settled on Myllyla for Nashville.

211) Washington Capitals — Vladislav Sukhachyov (G, Russia, Chelmet Chelyabinsk VHL, overager)

ANALYSIS: If you’ve been following my mocks in recent years, this pick is something of an inside joke or a running joke. You see, this is the fourth year in a row that I’ve predicted Sukhachyov to Washington in the seventh round — 207th in 2016, 213th in 2017, 217th in 2018 and now 211th in 2019. Call me crazy, but I’m hopeful that the fourth time will be the charm. If not, this will be the final time since 2019 is Sukhachyov’s final year of eligibility. Sukhachyov is another undersized Russian goaltender — even smaller than Miftakhov — but he’s got big game too.

It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Sukhachyov could get picked this year. A similar scenario played out last year with Finnish netminder Veini Vehviläinen — selected in the sixth round by Columbus after previously being passed over three times. I got rewarded for keeping the faith in Vehviläinen — mocking him in the sixth round in 2016, the seventh round in 2017 and, finally, the fifth in round in 2018 — so I’m sticking with Sukhachyov here too. I’ve learned over the years that if you believe in a prospect, don’t give up on him until he is no longer eligible — a lesson I learned the hard way with Sebastian Aho, the defenceman, having mocked him in the third round in 2015 and the sixth round in 2016, only to see him drafted in the fifth round in 2017, in his final year of eligibility when I decided against mocking him one last time. Long story short, I still believe in Sukhachyov — funny as this might be.

212) Columbus Blue Jackets (from Calgary via Ottawa) — Otto Latvala (RD, Finland, LeKi Mestis, overager)

ANALYSIS: Columbus only has two picks heading into this year’s draft and decides to use both of them on Finns after previously taking forward Leevi Aaltonen in the third round. Latvala, a big man with a big shot, was largely a man among boys at this year’s World Juniors. He opened a lot of eyes during that showcase, making it more likely than not that Latvala will get drafted as a double-overager. The Blue Jackets could be one of the teams taking a liking to Latvala.

213) Tampa Bay Lightning — Vladimir Sartakov (G, Russia, Avto Yekaterinburg MHL)

Height/Weight: 5-foot-11, 165 pounds

ANALYSIS: Tampa Bay is backstopped by all-world Andrei Vasilevskiy — a bigger Russian goaltender — but Sartakov is the third Russian netminder on the smaller side to get selected in this round, following Miftakhov and Sukhachyov. The Lightning would likely consider any of the three, but Sartakov also fits with my trend of Tampa taking some of the youngest prospects available in this year’s draft since he’s got a September birthdate. That could mean a growth spurt is still to come for Sartakov, but he’s already showing pretty good upside at his current size.

If Tampa isn’t targeting a Russian here or desires a bigger goaltending prospect, the Lightning could take 6-foot-2 Roman Basran from WHL Kelowna — one of the top goalies outside my top 217 (ranked 233) and a former teammate of Tampa first-rounder Cal Foote. The Lightning did take Connor Ingram out of the Dub and he’s developed into an AHL all-star, so that could bode well for Basran’s chances of getting drafted by Tampa Bay.

214) Calgary Flames (from Carolina) — Quinn Olson (LW, Canada, Okotoks AJHL)

Height/Weight: 5-foot-11, 170 pounds

Playoff Stats: 13 GP-5 G-10 A-15 PTS

Regular Season Stats: 54 GP-20 G-46 A-66 PTS

Central Scouting: 105 NAS

THW Larry Fisher: 182

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: Calgary didn’t have to look far to find its final pick, with Olson developing just down the road in one of the city’s suburbs. Olson is a Calgary kid, born and raised, and could be back playing in his hometown with the WHL Hitmen next season. Olson has been an offensive force at the tier-two junior level and really shone at the CJHL Top Prospects Game — scoring what stood up as the winner for Team West in that showcase — so he should be on the draft radar for several teams, including the Flames.

215) San Jose Sharks — Jonathan Brinkman (LW, Denmark, Aalborg Pirates)

Height/Weight: 5-foot-11, 165 pounds

Playoff Stats: 9 GP-0 G-0 A-0 PTS (Denmark)

Regular Season Stats: 32 GP-1 G-5 A-6 PTS (Denmark), 9 GP-4 G-11 A-15 PTS (Denmark2), 6 GP-4 G-5 A-9 PTS (Denmark U19)

Central Scouting: 128 EUS

THW Larry Fisher: 178

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: The Sharks stole a Danish forward in the seventh round in 2016 — that being Joachim Blichfeld, who led the WHL in scoring this season — so they hope for another steal here in Brinkman, who flashed high-end skill during this year’s World Juniors. San Jose could encourage Brickman to follow the same path as Blichfeld by coming overseas to develop in the CHL.

216) Carolina Hurricanes (from Boston via N.Y. Rangers) — Santeri Hatakka (LD, Finland, Jokerit U20)

Height/Weight: 6-foot-0, 174 pounds

Playoff Stats: 7 GP-1 G-4 A-5 PTS (U18-Sarja)

Regular Season Stats: 43 GP-4 G-9 A-13 PTS (U20-Liiga), 3 GP-0 G-1 A-1 PTS (U18-Sarja)

Central Scouting: 72 EUS

THW Larry Fisher: 207

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: Yes, one last Finn for Carolina — making it seven of 10 picks, with Hatakka the third defenceman (all left-handed) among that haul. Sure, that might be a bit unrealistic — a stretch to suggest the Hurricanes would use 70 per cent of their selections on prospects from the same country — but all those Finns made sense for Carolina at their respective spots, including Hatakka here to close it out. Hatakka’s ceiling isn’t as high as the two Finnish defenders that the Hurricanes took before him — Mikko Kokkonen in the second round and Iivari Rasanen in the sixth round — but he’s still a quality choice for Carolina in the final round.

217) St. Louis Blues — Luke Bast (LD, Canada, Brooks AJHL)

Height/Weight: 5-foot-9, 170 pounds

Playoff Stats: 15 GP-2 G-7 A-9 PTS, 6 GP-2 G-4 A-6 PTS (NJAC)

Regular Season Stats: 45 GP-7 G-28 A-35 PTS

Central Scouting: 137 NAS

THW Larry Fisher: 183

THW Ryan Pike: Not Ranked

THW Andrew Forbes: Not Ranked

ANALYSIS: St. Louis plucked Colton Parayko from this same tier-two junior league — as a third-rounder in 2012 — but those finds are few and far between in the later rounds. Bast isn’t a Parayko clone by any means, he’s obviously much smaller and more of a Vince Dunn type, but Bast could have enough skill and mobility to potentially make the big league someday. Bast finished his junior career as a winner — capturing the National Junior A Championship (formerly RBC Cup) — and will now be bound for the University of North Dakota next season. That NCAA program has developed several NHL defencemen over the years — including Jordan Schmaltz, a first-rounder for St. Louis in 2012 — so the Blues like the direction that Bast is headed.
