Oilers Sign Free Agent Drake Caggiula

The Edmonton Oilers have made their signing of top un-drafted free agent Drake Caggiula official, the team announced Saturday. He’s been inked to a two-year, entry-level contract.

The 21-year-old was a part of the vaunted “CBS line” for North Dakota, who won the national championship for the first time since 2000. Serving as an alternate captain in his senior year, he scored 25 goals and 51 points through 39 games, with a plus-46 rating.

Those 51 points had him tied for eighth in the country in points and tied for fifth in goals.

In the national championship against the Quinnipiac Bobcats, Caggiula was a force. He started a three-goal third period by scoring twice, helping the Fighting Hawks bury the No. 1 ranked Bobcats. In two games at the Frozen Four, he scored four goals and an assist.

The 5-foot-10 forward will join an increasingly stacked Oiler forward group, and may allow them a little more flexibility to acquire a defenseman via trade.
