This is the second of four posts highlighting the top 120 prospects for this year’s entry draft in June in Newark, New Jersey – the NHL 2013 Draft Rankings: War Room April Edition.
Gangs of New Jersey
Here are some of the groupings for the round 3 crowd.
(Statistics as of April 7th, 2013)
1. The Playoff Boys/Me: I say boys/men because this is where the men are separated from the boys and the real hockey players start to show up.
- Adam Tambellini, Surrey, BCHL, 11g 13 pts including 9 goals. Hopefully, Adam will take my former hometown team all the way to the BCHL championship and the Fred Page Cup.
- Zach Nastasiuk, Owen Sound, OHL, 7g 8pts +6. Although I was lukewarm to this guy earlier, he has won me over with his hard work and team play and is now a guy I would want drafted by my team.
- Lucas Wallmark, Karlskrona, Allsvenskan, 7g 5pts +2. Not bad playing against men.
- Yan Pavel Lapointe, PEI, QMJHL, 6g 5pts +1. Although PEI was eliminated, Yan Pavel scored a hat trick in the final game to force overtime. Then he proceeded to rattle a few of the posts before PEI eventually lost. You can still see him play as he will be on Team Canada’s U18 team.
- Emile Poirier, Gatineau, QMJHL, 8g 7pts +0. Has been better since Hyka and Reway returned from the U20’s after Christmas. Helped Gatineau eliminate Rimouski, a team with much better players on paper. Also, had a wowser March.
- Marc-Olivier Roy, Blainville-Boisbriand, QMJHL, 7g 13pts +6. Look at those results, what can you say – the numbers don’t lie.
2. The Just Got Promoted to Round 2 Crowd: If the playoff men noted above keep producing, there were will be more joining them. The hockey season is not over.
- Michael McCarron, USA NDP U18, USHL. Not perfect but just too much size and skills to stay in round 3.
- Dillon Harrington, Swift Current, WHL. Also got selected to Team Canada’s U18 team; I am looking for good things from Dillon in Sochi.
3. The Just Got Promoted to Round 3 Crowd:
- Mackenzie Weeger, Halifax, QMJHL. You can’t overlook this guy forever; led the “Q” in plus minus with +55.
- Nicholas Baptiste, Sudbury, OHL. Big boy, good skills, started slow but has been slowly putting it together since the Christmas holidays.
- Greg Chase, Calgary, WHL.
Confidence is a stain you can't wipe off
— Greg Chase (@GregChase9) March 8, 2013
- Myles Bell, Kelowna, WHL. The guy who decided Myles should be a forward is starting to look like a genius; 93pts +46 = not bad numbers for anybody.
- Gabryel Paquin-Boudreau, Baie-Comeau, QMJHL. Smaller guy but just keeps producing; 6g 10pts +7 in the playoffs so far.
4. The Just Got Demoted to Round 4/5 Crowd:
- Stephen Harper, Erie, OHL. Seems to have the skills but the results and attitude appear missing.
- Mason Geertsen, Vancouver, WHL. Had a difficult time since the trade to Vancouver.
- Scott Oke, Rimouski, QMJHL. Tailed off after Trainor was moved to another line.
- Wilhelm Westlund, Farjstead, Elitserien. Good player but “in between”, not too big, not too flashy, not very offensively minded.
- Philippe Desrosiers, Rimouski, QMJHL. Tailed off along with his team at the end of the season; not sure why. He had some injury issues so that may be the reason. Hopefully, he gets his mojo back as he has asked to go to Team Canada’s U18 evaluation/training camp.
5. The “I Changed My League” Guy.
- Tommy Vannelli, USHL NDP U18. Tommy has continued to have success after moving up to the USA NDP U18 team following the end to the Minnesota high school season. It will be interesting to see how well he performs at the U18’s – I have high expectations for him.
Historic Success Rate
Some of these guys will turn out as planned but historically only about 24% or 7 players from below will make it as full time NHLers.
