New Jersey Devils’ Timo Meier is on the brink of an impressive career milestone. During tonight’s (Oct. 3) matchup against the New York Islanders, he’ll skate in the 700th NHL game of his career.
The Devils acquired Meier from the San Jose Sharks in Feb. 2023, as part of a blockbuster trade that also sent Scott Harrington, Santeri Hatakka, Timur Ibragimov, Zachary Emond, and a fifth-round 2024 Draft pick to New Jersey. Just four months later, the organization inked Meier to an eight-year, $70.4 million extension, which carries a cap hit of $8.8 million.
Since joining the franchise, Meier has played an instrumental role in the Devils’ offense. He’s hit the 20-goal threshold for the past five seasons, including a career-high of 40 in 2022-23. Since 2023-24, he’s finished fourth in scoring for the club and has also been a key contributor on the power play.

Known as a high-volume shooter and power forward, Meier is a threat every time he steps onto the ice. He’s also unafraid to use his size and strength to win puck battles, creating scoring opportunities and rebounds for his teammates. Last season, he ranked near the top of the league in hardest shot (94.3 miles per hour) and shots on goal (269), according to data from NHL Edge.
Even though his point production has slowed in recent seasons, he’s expected to play a crucial role in 2026-27. He had an impressive preseason performance, notching one goal, one assist, nine shot attempts, five shots on goal, and four high-danger scoring opportunities across two games.
He has been skating in the Devils’ top six alongside Nico Hischier and Luke Evangelista, and the trio has found instant chemistry. Given how well they’ve meshed, it should come as no surprise if the Meier-Hischier-Evangelista line becomes an offensive catalyst for the club this season.
Meier will be on the hunt for his first point in the Devils’ second matchup of 2026-27, as the team looks to extend its win streak to two games.
