Miami’s Charlie Michaud Leaves Midseason For WHL Penticton

The Western Hockey League (WHL) Penticton Vees announced that Miami defenseman Charlie Michaud has left the RedHawks and will join the Vees immediately.

Michaud was a healthy scratch for most of the season with the RedHawks (NCHC). He appeared in only six games in the Lindenwood, Arizona State, and Western Michigan series and recorded no points. In those games, he averaged 12:52 of ice time, finished plus‑1, and registered two blocked shots. His season high came in the Saturday game at Lindenwood, where he logged 15:54.

Before arriving at Miami, Michaud served as an alternate captain for the United States Hockey League (USHL) Madison Capitols and posted 32 points last season with five goals and 27 assists.

The Vees released a quote on the addition of Michaud. “Charlie is a smooth, two-way defenceman who adds to an already strong D‑Core,” said Vees head coach and general manager Fred Harbinson. “We look forward to having him in the lineup Monday against the Rockets.”

This move is not ideal for Miami, but it is understandable. He was not getting the minutes he wanted, and in today’s college landscape, midseason departures are simply part of the reality. Michaud becomes the second RedHawk to leave this year. Netminder Shika Gadzhiev departed earlier in the season after being unable to gain NCAA eligibility. He has since returned to Slovakia and joined HK Nitra.

Michaud now heads to a Penticton team that is 16‑9‑4‑3 and sits second in the B.C. Division of the WHL. Best of luck to him moving forward.

For the RedHawks, his departure opens a roster spot, and Miami should be in position to add another player. A defenseman would be the most helpful addition for the room’s depth.
