3 Canadiens Goaltending Prospects Off to Impressive Starts in 2026-27

The Montreal Canadiens have plenty of reasons to be excited about their future between the pipes. With Jacob Fowler already making a strong impression at the NHL level, the organization appears to have found a potential long-term solution in goal. However, Fowler isn’t the only young goaltender in the Canadiens’ system worth keeping an eye on. While much of the attention has understandably been directed toward Fowler and Jakub Dobes, several other goaltending prospects have quietly put together impressive performances to begin the 2026-27 season. From the NCAA to Russia, Montreal has some intriguing young netminders developing at different levels. Here are three Canadiens goaltending prospects who have stood out early this season. Quentin Miller  Quentin Miller has been one of the most impressive goaltending prospects in the Canadiens’ organization to begin the season. The former fourth-round selection has been outstanding for Western Michigan University, posting a 4-1-0 record through his first five appearances. What makes his start even more impressive are his individual statistics. Miller currently owns a remarkable 1.00 goals-against average and a .956 save percentage, numbers that demonstrate just how dominant he has been between the pipes. While five games represent a relatively small sample size, there is no denying that Miller has been giving his team an excellent chance to win every night. His ability to keep the puck out of the net has been a major factor in his team’s early success, and he is quickly becoming a prospect worth following more closely. For the Canadiens, Miller’s development is particularly encouraging considering where he was selected in the draft. Fourth-round picks are far from guaranteed to become NHL players, especially at the goaltending position, where development can be unpredictable. Of course, it remains far too early to suggest that Miller will eventually become an NHL regular. However, if he can maintain anything close to this level of play throughout the NCAA season, he could significantly improve his standing within Montreal’s prospect pool. Alexis Cournoyer  Another Canadiens goaltending prospect who has enjoyed an excellent start to the season is Alexis Cournoyer. The former fifth-round selection has been impressive in his first two starts with the University of Wisconsin, winning both contests. Through those appearances, Cournoyer has recorded a 1.00 goals-against average and a .935 save percentage. Although his sample size is even smaller than Miller’s, those numbers are certainly encouraging for a young goaltender looking to establish himself at the NCAA level. For Montreal, Cournoyer represents another interesting long-term project. Goaltenders selected in the later rounds often require several years of development before their NHL potential becomes clearer, making patience particularly important. The fact that Cournoyer is already finding success against NCAA competition is a positive sign. However, the next challenge will be maintaining that consistency as the season progresses and he faces more difficult opponents. It is also important to remember that the Canadiens do not necessarily need every goaltending prospect to become an NHL starter. Developing a reliable backup or even creating valuable organizational depth would represent a successful outcome for a fifth-round selection. Still, Cournoyer has given Montreal fans something to be excited about early in the season. If he continues performing at this level, he could quickly become one of the more interesting under-the-radar prospects in the organization.
