Canadiens’ Jacob Fowler the Early Calder Trophy Favourite

Canadiens’ Jacob Fowler the Early Calder Trophy Favourite

The Montreal Canadiens might have found their goaltender of the future, and he is already making a massive impact in the present. Just a few weeks into the 2026-27 NHL season, Jacob Fowler has established himself as one of the league’s most impressive goaltenders, putting together performances that have helped keep Montreal competitive. While plenty of talented rookies are making their mark around the league, Fowler is quickly building a strong case to be considered the early favorite for the Calder Trophy, awarded annually to the NHL’s top rookie. The Numbers Speak for Themselves It is difficult to find a lot of goaltenders in the NHL who have been better than Jacob Fowler to start the season. Through his first seven appearances, the 21-year-old has posted an outstanding 6-1-0 record, a 1.54 goals-against average, and a .942 save percentage. Those are remarkable numbers for any NHL goaltender, let alone a rookie. To put those numbers into perspective, among goaltenders with at least five starts this season, only Linus Ullmark has recorded a better save percentage than Fowler. Meanwhile, only Ullmark and Jake Oettinger have posted a better goals-against average. Essentially, Fowler is already performing like one of the NHL’s elite goaltenders despite having very limited experience at this level. What makes his performances even more impressive is the situation surrounding him. Montreal has struggled defensively at times this season, allowing far too many scoring chances and making life difficult for its goaltenders. However, Fowler has consistently found ways to keep his team in games, making crucial saves when needed and giving the Canadiens a chance to win almost every night. His calmness, positioning, and ability to handle pressure have been particularly impressive. Rather than looking like a young goaltender trying to establish himself, Fowler has looked like a legitimate NHL starter. How Does His Competition Compare? While Fowler has been outstanding, the Calder Trophy race certainly isn’t lacking talented candidates. However, when comparing their early-season performances and overall impact on their respective teams, the Canadiens goaltender might have the strongest argument. Between the pipes, Dylan Garand has emerged as another interesting rookie following Igor Shesterkin’s injury. Garand has received significant playing time and is the only rookie goaltender with more starts than Fowler. However, his numbers haven’t come close to matching what the Canadiens rookie has accomplished. Among skaters, James Hagens, Ivar Stenberg, and Trevor Connelly have all recorded nine points, putting them in a tie for the rookie scoring lead. All three have shown promising offensive abilities and could certainly become serious Calder contenders as the season progresses. However, there is a significant difference between producing offensively and completely changing a team’s chances of winning. That is exactly what Fowler has done for Montreal. With Fowler in net, the Canadiens have won six of seven games. Without him, Montreal has struggled considerably, posting a 1-2-2 record while allowing more than four goals per game. Those numbers illustrate just how important the young goaltender has become to this team. Montreal has looked considerably more confident with Fowler between the pipes, knowing that even when defensive mistakes happen, their goaltender can bail them out. No other rookie has arguably made a bigger difference for his team so far this season. Can Fowler Keep This Up? Of course, the biggest question surrounding Fowler’s Calder Trophy candidacy is whether he can maintain this incredible level of play throughout the season.…
