Suggested Trade Sees Predators Land Red Wings’ Simon Edvinsson

Detroit Red Wings’ Simon Edvinsson has been the center of a lot of conversations lately, as he remains without a contract with the 2026-27 season well underway. Recent reports indicate that Edvinsson would prefer to be traded, rather than signing a new deal with the Red Wings, but it seems as though the Red Wings still would rather bring him back.

While there is no real indication of how things are going to turn out, it seems possible that the Red Wings are forced to trade Edvinsson and try to bring back a solid trade return. One team that makes sense as a potential suitor is the Nashville Predators.

New general manager Chris MacFarland has proven he is willing to make plenty of moves to try and improve the Predators, and him taking a swing on Edvinsson could make perfect sense.

In this article, we take a quick look at what a potential trade could look like between the Red Wings, if they decide to trade Edvinsson, and the Predators.

Keep in mind, there is no indication the Red Wings and Predators have had any conversations about Edvinsson, and while there are some trade rumors surrounding him, there is no imminent trade expected.

Preds Land Edvinsson, Red Wings Bring Back Solid Return

Edvinsson, who is 23 years old, played 72 games last season, scoring nine goals and adding 16 assists for 25 points. Throughout 175 career games, he has scored 19 goals and added 41 assists for 60 points, which comes out to a 0.34 points-per-game average.

He is viewed as an offensive-minded defender who has the potential to be a top-two defenseman in his prime, and it seems as though he can already handle playing big minutes, averaging 21:10 of ice time per game throughout his career.

While Edvinsson would like to be traded, the Red Wings still hold some leverage, and don’t have to trade him right away. So, even if they do end up moving him, they will be looking for a solid trade return which may cost any team, in this case the Predators, a couple of young players and some draft capital.

Realistically, a deal could look like this:

  • Predators Receive: D Simon Edvinsson (7-year extension in sign-and-trade)
  • Red Wings Receive: F Reid Schaefer, F Joakim Kemell, Predators’ own 2028 first-round pick, and Predators’ own 2028 second-round pick.

The Predators land a solid defender in Edvinsson, while the Red Wings add two young and promising forwards, with draft capital they could either use, or flip in another deal for more players to remain competitive.

They’re in a weird spot, where they want to contend and push for a playoff spot, but their aggressive approach hasn’t worked out for them. Another swing for Edvinsson could push them over the hump. It would come with some risk, but at this point, they need to take risky swings if they want to become serious contenders.

The Red Wings may want to bring back a defenseman in a deal, but they do have several young defenders in Axel Sandin-Pelikka, William Willander, Anton Johansson, and Jacob Bernard-Docker, and may prefer to not overload their blue line.

Schaefer, who is 23 years old, has 50 games of NHL experience under his belt, having scored six goals and added two assists for eight points. Kemell, who is 22 years old, has 18 games of NHL experience, having scored one goal and adding two assists for three points.

These two teams could find a way to pull this deal off, but it seems as though the Red Wings want to try and re-sign Edvinsson. If they do choose to make a deal, this seems like a package that could convince them to pull the trigger.

The Predators would have to find a way to extend Edvinsson as well, and if he is willing to sign a seven-year extension at $8.5 million annually, they could get it done and fit him into their roster.

Time will tell where Edvinsson ends up playing this season, but if he does get moved, I would fully expect the Predators to be a team that makes a serious offer.
