The Vegas Golden Knights joined the NHL in 2017 as the league’s first expansion team since 2000 when the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild started operations. The Golden Knights broke the mold for expansion franchises by winning their division and reaching the Stanley Cup Final in their inaugural season. It was the most successful debut season for an expansion franchise in the history of North American professional sports. Although they lost that series to the Washington Capitals, the Golden Knights followed it up with five playoff appearances in their first six seasons. They won their first Stanley Cup in 2023.
