Rankings
Viggo Tamm is a Swedish goaltender with impressive size and movement. Even at just 17 years old, he is already 6-foot-5 and 165 pounds with plenty of time to grow. His athleticism and movement are impressive, especially given his large frame. He has had some very high-performing games, yet at the same time, he tends to let pucks in on what should be easy saves. He will definitely need to refine his skills before he is ready for the NHL.

This is his first season with Leksands IF at the U20 level, and he’s had an impressive showing. He has played 30 games with the team, where he’s averaged a .900 save percentage (SV%), his highest since he played at the U16 level. He holds a 2.75 goals against average (GAA) this season and has made a massive 576 saves. His 14-9-0 record is certainly not bad, but he will need to continue his development to be successful at higher levels of play.
He had a good showing with Sweden at their recent World Junior A Challenge appearance. In three games, Tamm stopped 89 shots, yielding him a .908 SV% and 2.83 GAA. He helped Sweden take home a bronze medal in the tournament.

He tracks the puck well and utilizes his goal crease effectively, but needs to work on closing potential holes in his stance more consistently. He leaves space for skilled puckhandlers to slide in and slip the puck past his body. If he can tighten up his frame and play a more refined, technically sound game, he will be more effective and valuable for his team.
Viggo Tamm – NHL Draft Projection
While there does not seem to be a consensus on where Tamm will land in this year’s draft, he would likely not be picked up until one of the late rounds. Being a goaltender already generally yields a lower draft slot, and he does not stand out among the goalie class as a highly sought-after player. He will likely be drafted by a team looking to add a decent goalie to their pipeline and develop him.
Quotables
“Great technically skilled goalkeeper who plays with a good positional game. At the same time, he has the upside of being situationally adaptable and dynamic.” – Leksands IF
“Tamm is a big, athletic goalie who moves very well for his size.” – Janik Beichler, Elite Prospects Scouting Reports
Strengths
- Makes big saves when needed
- Large frame
- Impressive athleticism
Under Construction/Improvements to Make
- Needs to close holes in stance
- Needs to refine technical game
- Consistency in making saves
NHL Potential
Tamm’s NHL potential is hard to determine based on his performance so far. While it is not bad, by any means, he is definitely not ready for the level of offense that the big league would bring. Even at the junior level, he averages SV% somewhere in the .880-.900 range– definitely a middle-of-the-road figure.
He will need time and development at increasingly higher levels of play to determine whether he is ready to take on the NHL-calibre goalscorers. If a team is willing to put in the work to develop him, his skills would translate well, and he could be a backup in a few years.
