Calder Trophy Winners, Videos and Stories

The Calder Trophy is a National Hockey League award given to the player deemed most proficient in his first year of play in the NHL. Typically called Rookie of the Year, the award is voted by the members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association (The Hockey Writers website has no affiliation with the PHWA).
The Trophy was first presented in the 1936-37 season although rookie of the year honors had started being announced in 1932-33.

In 1990 Sergei Makarov won the award – he was 31 and not a rookie by any accounts but it was his first year in the NHL. The rules were modified the following season.
