2019 NHL Draft: Fisher’s Top 217 for February

By now, we have a pretty good read on the 2019 draft class.

Through the CHL Top Prospects Game, I’ve had tunnel vision this season — more so than in years past. I made a conscious decision in the summer to focus almost solely on the first-time eligibles to this point and I feel that effort has paid dividends. I feel like I know this group, top to bottom, better than most years — though it probably helps that it’s a better year for the Western Hockey League, which is my wheelhouse and where I have familiarity with prospects dating back to their bantam draft year.

Overall, with this being my sixth ranking for 2019, I feel quite confident in my February list — certainly the first round or two, but all the way down to No. 217 are prospects that have a legitimate shot of getting drafted in my opinion. The order will continue to change between now and June, and new names may emerge in my rankings — there are 10 newcomers from January to February and 30 more on my radar after scouring Central Scouting’s midterm lists — but, by and large, I’m proud of my latest rankings and all the accumulated work that has gone into them since August. It is so much more than just a list of names, presently totalling 455 first-time eligibles.

RELATED: Midseason Consensus Rankings for 2019 NHL Draft

The recent Top Prospects Games, both the CHL and the CJHL, marked the midway point on the scouting calendar with a best-on-best showcase and a chance for me to get an ‘eye test’ on the perceived risers from out east in the Ontario and Quebec leagues. As a result, some of them shot up my rankings for February as suggested in this recap and also discussed on this episode of the Mickey Mic Show — a podcast worth listening to, hosted by THW colleague Nathan Kanter.

We talked all sorts of 2019 NHL Draft topics and teased these rankings in the process, which included my take on the 4-11 tier in the first round and how little separation there is between those eight prospects in particular. For those who prefer tiers, after 1, 2, 3, 4-11, I see it as 12-26 and 27-45, with most of the prospects in those ranges being interchangeable to some degree. Beyond that, my seventh tier literally spans from 46 to 90 as of today.

The next big scouting event will be the under-18 world championship tournament in April ahead of the annual combine in late May or early June (dates yet to be announced to my knowledge). It all leads up to the draft in Vancouver on June 21-22.

There is also this week’s U18 Five Nations Tournament, taking place in Sochi and featuring host Russia with the United States, Finland, Sweden and the Czech Republic. There will be lots of talent on display there, lots of the prospects from my top 90, so that will be worth watching from afar.

Jack Hughes, the consensus top prospect for 2019, won’t be suiting up for Team USA at the Five Nations Tournament due to a lower-body injury.

Playoff performances in the various leagues this spring will impact my rankings going forward, but there is typically a bit of a lull for me between the CHL Top Prospects Game in late January and the start of the postseason in late March.

So for now, for the rest of February following the Five Nations, I’m going to shift my attention to the overagers — the prospects who were passed over in previous drafts and the late-bloomers who weren’t on the radar for 2018 and 2017, or even 2016 for some European prospects. The overagers for the 2019 draft are born between Jan. 1, 1999 and Sept. 15, 2000 for those developing in North America and dating back to Jan. 1, 1998 for those overseas, who strangely (and confusingly) get an extra year of eligibility under the current draft rules.

Nevertheless, I’m already familiar with most of the eligible overagers from scouting all three of those drafts — and publishing full seven-round mocks for each — so it’s not so much getting to know that group as it is catching up with them by tracking their progress and improvements this season. I’m sure there will be some foreign names that turn into discovery missions too.

I have been keeping tabs on them sporadically to date and also keeping a partial eye on prospects for future drafts — 2020 and beyond — but, as mentioned, the 2019 class has consumed me until now, so this month is my chance to take a deep dive into the pool of overagers.

It’ll be another time-consuming project that produces another massive list — likely a Top 217 again, all overagers, with potential for that many more on the radar thus also totalling in excess of 400 names. Upwards of 50 overagers get drafted every year, so it’s not a waste of time by any means.

Brett Leason Prince Albert Raiders
(Robert Murray/WHL)
Brett Leason of the WHL’s Prince Albert Raiders is the projected top overager for 2019 and he’ll be topping my rankings, along with Russian goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov, who starred at the World Juniors.

The tentative plan is to publish my overager rankings in early March, then incorporate those overagers into my four remaining monthly rankings — slated for late March following the regular seasons, April following the U18 worlds, May prior to the combine, and a final edition in June just before the draft. That’s ambitious, especially since I’ll be busy working away on my eighth annual mock for early June, when I’ll attempt to predict all seven rounds, all 217 selections for the fourth year in a row.

Alas, still no overagers for February, but here are my top 217 first-time eligible prospects and 238 other names on my radar for the 2019 NHL Draft:
