The Montreal Canadiens have spent the last several years building one of the more intriguing prospect pools in the NHL. While several young players have already graduated to the NHL, there is still plenty of talent developing throughout the organization.
Heading into the 2026-27 season, the Canadiens have prospects at different stages of their development. Some are getting closer to challenging for NHL opportunities, while others are only beginning to show what they could eventually become. Here are five Canadiens prospects worth keeping a particularly close eye on this season.
Michael Hage
Michael Hage remains one of the biggest names in Montreal’s prospect pool and will enter another important season in his development. Since being selected in the first round by the Canadiens, Hage has continued to establish himself as one of the organization’s most promising offensive prospects. His combination of skating, skill and offensive creativity makes him particularly interesting for an organization that is always looking to add more talent down the middle.
The biggest thing to watch this season will be how much closer Hage gets to becoming an NHL option. There is no reason for Montreal to rush him, especially with the young talent already established on the NHL roster. Hage decided to stay in Michigan for one more season. Can he take another step?
Instead, the Canadiens can allow him to continue developing his overall game and becoming a more complete centre. Another major step forward would only reinforce the idea that Hage could eventually become an important part of Montreal’s top nine.
Alexander Zharovsky
Few Canadiens prospects have generated as much intrigue as Alexander Zharovsky. The Russian forward brings exactly the type of offensive upside that makes a prospect exciting to follow. He has the skill and creativity to create opportunities with the puck, and the Canadiens will be hoping he can continue turning those tools into consistent production.
Zharovsky might not be the prospect Canadiens fans see in Montreal immediately, but that doesn’t make his upcoming season any less important. Development isn’t always about getting to the NHL as quickly as possible. For Zharovsky, continuing to add maturity to his game and showing that his offensive abilities can translate as the competition gets tougher will be worth monitoring.
Montreal already has Ivan Demidov as a major part of its young core. If Zharovsky continues progressing, the Canadiens could eventually have another dangerous Russian forward coming behind him.
Gleb Pugachyov
All eyes will also be on one of the newest major additions to the Canadiens’ prospect pool. Montreal traded up to select Gleb Pugachyov in the first round of the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, immediately making him one of the organization’s most notable prospects.
At 6-foot-3, Pugachyov brings something a little different to Montreal’s system. The winger combines size with offensive upside and gives the Canadiens another potential power-forward option for the future. His first full season following the draft will give Montreal a much better indication of what it has in Pugachyov. The Canadiens don’t need him to immediately dominate, but they’ll want to see progression in how consistently he can impose himself.

For a prospect with his physical tools, there is plenty to be excited about. Now comes the important part of turning those tools into results.
Luke Mittelstadt
Luke Mittelstadt might have entered training camp with considerably less attention than some of Montreal’s bigger-name prospects, but he certainly did something about that. Mittelstadt had a strong camp and opened some eyes along the way.
That alone makes him a fascinating player to monitor this season. Training camp performances don’t guarantee NHL success, but they can change how an organization views a player and potentially accelerate his path toward earning opportunities.
For Mittelstadt, the next challenge is carrying that momentum into the regular season. Montreal already has plenty of competition on defence, both at the NHL level and within its prospect pool. Standing out won’t be easy. However, if Mittelstadt can build on what he showed during camp, he could continue climbing the organizational depth chart.
Sometimes an organization’s most interesting developments come from players who weren’t necessarily expected to force their way into the conversation. Mittelstadt has given Canadiens fans a reason to watch what comes next.
Bryce Pickford
Bryce Pickford might be one of the most fascinating prospects in Montreal’s system after the offensive explosion he produced with the Medicine Hat Tigers. The Canadiens prospect has developed into a major offensive weapon from the blue line, breaking records in Medicine Hat and significantly raising expectations surrounding his future.
Producing huge numbers at the junior level is one thing. The next challenge for Pickford is proving that his offensive development can continue as he moves to professional hockey. His ability to jump into the offence and contribute from the back end gives Montreal another intriguing option in an organization that has placed a clear emphasis on mobile, puck-moving defencemen.
Pickford has already done plenty to raise his stock since being drafted. If he takes another significant step this season, he could quickly become one of the biggest names in Montreal’s prospect pool.
Canadiens’ Prospect Pool Still Has Plenty to Offer
The Canadiens have reached the point where much of their young core is already playing in Montreal. That doesn’t mean the prospect pipeline has dried up. Not all five will follow the same path or develop at the same speed. That’s part of what makes following prospects so interesting. For a Canadiens organization hoping to remain competitive for years rather than simply for one season, the development of this next wave will be just as important as the young players who have already arrived.
