Bruins’ Parent Hurt in Lopsided Loss to Wings
Norm Ullman, described by some as the most complete hockey player on the planet, scored three goals and added three assists as the Detroit Red Wings drubbed the Boston Bruins 10-2 last night at the Olympia in Detroit.
The loss may have been a costly one for the Bruins. Rookie goalie Bernie Parent left the game at the end of the first period. Parent sustained a hand injury Wednesday night against Chicago and appeared to be hampered by it last night. He gave up three goals in the first 20 minutes before retiring.
Gerry Cheevers replaced Parent at the start of the second period and surrendered the other seven Detroit markers.
The Red Wings pumped three goals past Parent in the first. Doug Barkley opened the scoring at 5:04 with his second of the season. Ullman followed up with his first of the night about a minute and a half later. Ron Murphy counted the third Detroit goal at 10:27. The Wings outshot the Bruins 13-5 in the opening frame.
Detroit scored four more times in the middle stanza and the game was officially a rout. Ullman, Val Fonteyne, Alex Delvecchio and Bruce MacGregor were the goal-getters in the second. Shots on goal favoured Detroit 11-6.
In the final period, Ullman netted his third of the night, MacGregor scored his second, and Floyd Smith rounded out the Red Wings scoring. John Bucyk and Murray Oliver found the range on Wings’ goalie Roger Crozier.
Red Wings star Gordie Howe was taken to hospital after blocking a shot in the first period, but x-rays proved to be negative and the injury is not expected to cause the great right-winger to miss any time.
Ullman’s six points moved him into a fourth-place tie with Montreal’s Jean Beliveau in the National Hockey League scoring race.
Flyers Lose Again in OHA
The Niagara Falls Flyers are certainly having and up and down season in the OHA Junior A Series. Lately, it’s been mostly down. After going 13 games without a loss to start the season, the Flyers were defeated for the fourth time in a row last night. The Peterborough Petes skated to a 6-2 win over the Flyers in a hard-hitting contest in Peterborough.
Danny Grant led the Petes attack with three goals. Dan Sharpe fired a pair, with Gord Tucker netting the other. John Arbour and Jean Pronovost connected for Niagara Falls.
The Hamilton Red Wings trounced the St. Catharines Black Hawks 7-3 in the other OHA game last night, played in Hamilton.
The Wings built a 5-0 lead after two periods before letting up a bit in the third.
Eddie Hatoum scored three goals for Hamilton. Danny Lawson, Freddie Speck and Kevin Petit had one each. Richie Bayes scored a pair for the Hawks, with Kerry Bond adding a single.
Hatoum is an interesting story. He moved to Canada only eight years ago from Beirut, Lebanon.
The win moves Hamilton into sixth place, one point ahead of the St. Catharines.
Aces Trip Canucks
The Vancouver Canucks of the Western Hockey League lost the first game of their Eastern tour last night in Quebec. The Aces skated to a 4-1 win over Vancouver before nearly 3800 fans took in the game in Le Colisee.
Don Blackburn was the scoring hero for Quebec with a pair of goals. Leon Rochefort and Ed Hoekstra added the others.
Billy McNeill scored the only goal for Vancouver to ruin Gary Bauman’s shutout bid.
Totems Slice Blades
The Seattle Totems had an easy time with the slumping Los Angeles Blades last night in Western Hockey League play. Seattle skated to a 5-2 win over the cellar-dwelling Blades.
Bill MacFarland scored twice for Seattle, with Larry Lund, Bill Dineen and Don Chiz netting the others.
Bill Orban and Leo Labine were the Los Angeles scorers.
Notes:
- Leading scorer Bobby Rousseau of the Montreal Canadiens is a doubtful starter for Saturday’s game against the New York Rangers. Rousseau is bothered by a groin injury suffered in the third period of Sunday’s game against Chicago.
- New York Ranger forward Vic Hadfield had negatives on his injured right foot yesterday after blocking a host in Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The x-rays revealed no breaks and Hadfield will likely play this weekend.
- Toronto Maple Leafs have returned Brian Conacher to Rochester of the AHL.
