Chicago Blackhawks Reunite With Patrick Kane; Agree to 2-Year Contract

The Chicago Blackhawks are reuniting with a franchise icon. Three-time Stanley Cup champion and former Hart Trophy winner Patrick Kane has agreed to a two-year contract. The deal is worth $8 million a season.

Kane Is Back in the Windy City

Kane spent the last three seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. The Buffalo native scored 16 goals and recorded 57 points in 67 games last season. In addition to the Blackhawks and Red Wings, he also had a short stint with the New York Rangers.

In 1,369 games, Kane has scored 508 goals and has recorded 1,400 points. He ranks fifth among American-born players in goals and tops the list in points.

Franchise Icon Returns

Kane scored 446 goals in 1,161 regular-season games with Chicago between 2007 and 2023. The winger is prominently featured in the Blackhawks’ record book. He is second in assists (779) and points (1,225), third in games played (1,161), and fourth in goals (446).

He won the Hart Trophy, Art Ross Trophy, and Ted Lindsay Award for the 2015-16 season. Playing in all 82 games, Kane scored 46 goals. Furthermore, he won the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie in 2008.

Kane was a key member of the Blackhawks’ Stanley Cup championships in 2010, 2013, and 2015. He scored the Cup-winning goal in 2010. In 2013, he won the Conn Smythe Award as the league’s playoff MVP.

Role With the Blackhawks

Even at age 37, Kane is still a productive player. He will slot on the Blackhawks’ top two lines. It is unclear at this time who his linemates will be. He may be paired with Connor Bedard, who recently signed a five-year extension with the team. Just a few days ago, Bedard expressed support for the possibility of Kane joining the team.

I don’t know what I can say to persuade his decision, but obviously we’d all be so excited to have player like that but also a guy like that. I can’t imagine his first game back at the [United Center with the Blackhawks], the reaction he’d get and how much juice that would bring to not only our team but our fans, as well. That would be incredible to play with him and learn from him.

The Blackhawks may be rebuilding, but fans in Chicago are undoubtedly rejoicing right now. A franchise icon has returned, their future icon is extended, and the team made a major upgrade on defense. Things are certainly trending in the right direction in the Windy City.
