Grubauer has just skated with Team Germany at the recent Olympic Qualifier tournament, with his team winning a ticket to the 2018 Olympic Games in South Korea. Danish netminder Frederik Andersen is out for 3-4 weeks and therefore has to miss the World Cup. With the inclusion of Grubauer, Germany will have six players on the roster and will be the most-represented country for Team Europe.
The native of Rosenheim, Germany, posted a 8-9-1 record with the Capitals last year. He appeared to be in great shape at the Olympic Qualifier tournament, having won all three games and posting a goals-against average of only 0.67 and a saves percentage of .970. The Team Europe crease will be defended by Grubauer, Thomas Greiss and Jaroslav Halak. Grubauer is a former CHL Memorial Cup champion, having backstopped the Belleville Bulls to the title in the 2009-10 season.
