Rankings

The Kitchener Rangers were an absolute beast in the Ontario Hockey League. Despite boasting a lot of quality talent, Alexander Bilecki made a lot of noise and turned a lot of heads and impressed even though he was a third pairing defender. He finished with 29 points in 66 games and added another 11 in 18 playoff games as the Rangers secured the OHL Championship.

While the production may not be at the same level as other players in the draft, he continued to elevate his play and play a major part to the Rangers’ success in the second half and into the postseason.

Bilecki is a very mobile, agile and deceptive skater, being able to change his speed and pace in both the offensive and defensive zone. He has great four-way movement and doesn’t break stride to get into the open spaces when attacking. He shows great composure and poise when dealing with pressure and gets out of trouble with his skating, edgework and hands to navigate through those tough situations and then quickly finds an outlet to breakout and move the play forward. He has good protection skills and makes smart decisions with the puck making quick side step movements to get by attackers with ease.

Bilecki is a very crisp and accurate passer, connecting with his teammates frequently and often, be it short tape to tape passes or long stretch plays for a quick transition to the forwards. His head is always on a swivel, scanning the ice and assessing his options to breakout or carry the play himself. He’s always getting those puck touches and is always looking to create something by opening things up. He doesn’t have a powerful shot, but he does a great job to get pucks on net and where to place it for rebound opportunities. He makes solid reads to make timely pinches to keep the play alive in the offensive zone or engage on the cycle.

Defensively, Bilecki’s game continues to be a work in progress, but there are some things to like even if it’s not as consistent from time to time. He’s sound positionally and aggressively attacks puck carriers and can intercept plays very well. He does a great job to keep players to the outside, stay with his assignments and displays great energy and intensity in the corners. He needs to add more strength to his game to handle that style at the next level.

Even though he did well in a limited role on a deep team, he has a chance to elevate his play and be a more reliable player next season. That alone could help his development tremendously on top of his strong play in the OHL playoffs.

Other THW Draft Profiles

Alexander Bilecki – NHL Draft Projection

Bilecki’s projection is somewhat of an interesting one. NHL Central Scouting has him as a potential third rounder. However, there’s a good chance he could get taken higher than where he is slated to go. He has been productive at an important time for his team and with an elevated role next season, there’s a good possibility he could be a valuable second- round pick.

Quotables

“He’s an offensively oriented defender who has good size (6’2) and skating ability. He’s shown an ability to quarterback the powerplay and has been a difference maker in the transition game. Defends aggressively and has a great stick in the neutral zone; although he’s struggled at times defending down low.” – Brock Otten, OHL Prospects/ McKeen’s Hockey

“He’s smart, he can skate, and he’s just scratching the surface, which is why scouts are excited about him. They believe there’s more offense to come for the puckmover, and the potential is great because Bilecki still needs to get stronger and fill out his frame.” – Ryan Kennedy, The Hockey News

Strengths

  • Strong and smooth skater with great speed
  • Patient and effective with breakouts or carrying the puck
  • Handles pressure and evades it well
  • Strong breakout passing and distribution

Under Construction- Improvements to Make

  • Needs to get stronger to handle physical play
  • Defensive consistency needs to show
  • Did well further down the lineup on a deep team, needs to elevate production next season

NHL Potential

Despite being further down the lineup in juniors, Bilecki does have some upside and potential in order to improve what he can be at the next level. His skating and passing can instantly make him a decent mid-pairing defender, who can quarterback a power play and be extremely dangerous at five-on-five. He’s a strong transitional and breakout player and you know that teams are valuing that more so now.

Bilecki recently won the OHL Championship with the Rangers. He will participate in the CHL Memorial Cup.
