According to College Hockey Inc., 31 percent of the hockey players in the NHL have come from NCAA Division I hockey. During the 2014 NHL trade deadline, 38 players were traded. Here’s a look at the players with college hockey experience that were traded during the 2014 NHL Trade Deadline.

The Buffalo Sabres traded forward Matt Moulson and forward Cody McCormick to the Minnesota Wild for forward Torrey Mitchell, along with a couple of second-round draft picks.
Matt Moulson played four seasons with Cornell University (ECAC) 2002-06. The All-ECAC forward scored (71g-67a—138pts) in a 134 games with the Big Red.
Torrey Mitchell played three seasons with the University of Vermont (Hockey East) 2004-07. Mitchell scored (35g-70a—105pts) in 115 games with the Catamounts.
The Montreal Canadiens traded forward Sebastian Collberg and a draft pick to the New York Islanders for forward Thomas Vanek and a draft pick.
Thomas Vanek played two seasons with the University of Minnesota (WCHA) 2002-04. The All-American forward scored (57g-56a—113pts) in 83 games with the Golden Gophers. Vanek led the Gophers to an NCAA title in 2003.
The Calgary Flames traded RW Lee Stempniak to Pittsburgh Penguins for a third-round pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
Lee Stempniak played four seasons with Dartmouth College (ECAC) 2001-05. The two-time All-American forward scored (63g-88a—151) in 135 games with the Big Green.
The Columbus Blue Jackets traded All-Star forward Marian Gaborik to Los Angeles Kings for forward Matt Frattin, along with a couple of second-round draft picks.
Matt Frattin played four seasons with the University of North Dakota (WCHA) 2007-11. The All-American forward scored (64g-55a—119pts) in 153 games with the Fighting Sioux. Frattin led UND to the 2011 NCAA Frozen Four, and was a Hobey Baker Memorial Award Finalist.
The Columbus Blue Jackets traded forward Jonathan Marchessault and forward Dalton Smith to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Defenseman Matt Taormina and forward Dana Tyrell.
Matt Taormina played four seasons with Providence College (Hockey East) 2004-09. The All-Hockey East defenseman scored (20g-45a—65pts) in 144 games with the Friars.
The Dallas Stars traded goalie Dan Ellis to the Florida Panthers for goalie Tim Thomas.
Dan Ellis played three seasons with the University of Nebraska-Omaha (CCHA) 2000-03. The All-CCHA goalie had a (53-51-12, .910 SV%, and a 2.67 GAA) during his career with the Mavericks.
Tim Thomas played four seasons with the University of Vermont (ECAC) 1993-97. The All-American goalie was (81-43-14, .924 SV% and a 2.70GAA) during his career with the Catamounts. Thomas was the teammate of forward Martin St. Louis. Thomas went to the 1996 NCAA Frozen Four.
The Nashville Predators traded forward David Legwand to Detroit Red Wings for forward Patrick Eaves, and forward Calle Jarnkrok and a conditional pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
Patrick Eaves played three seasons with Boston College (Hockey East) 2002-05. The All-American forward scored (47g-60a—107pts) in 84 games with the Eagles.
NY Rangers traded RW Ryan Callahan, a conditional pick in the 2014 NHL Draft and their 1st-round pick in 2015 to Tampa Bay for RW Martin St. Louis.

The three-time All-American forward is the all-time leading scorer for Vermont scoring (91g-176a—267pts) in 140 games with the Catamounts. St. Louis was also a three-time Hobey Baker Memorial Award Finalist. St Louis led his team to the 1996 NCAA Frozen Four. St Louis was also a teammate of goalie Tim Thomas.
The Boston Bruins claimed defenseman Corey Potter off waivers from the Edmonton Oilers.
