Oilers Prospects Making Impression With Team USA at Summer Showcase

A pair of Edmonton Oilers prospects are making an impression on USA Hockey at the 2026 World Junior Summer Showcase in Windsor, Ontario.

Defenceman Asher Barnett and goaltender Ryan Cameron both made the cut when the United States trimmed its roster by 10 players on Tuesday (July 28).

USA Hockey began this year’s Summer Showcase with two teams, USA Blue and USA White, before forming one squad for the latter half of the annual event, which is taking place at the WFCU Center. There are now 32 players on the American roster, including Barnett and Cameron.

The Summer Showcase effectively serves as an audition for spots on Team USA’s roster at the upcoming 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship, which takes place from Dec. 26, 2026, to Jan. 5, 2027, at Rogers Place in Edmonton and the Marchant Crane Centrium in Red Deer, Alberta.

Strong Showings with USA Blue

To start off, Barnett and Cameron were both part of the USA Blue team, which defeated Sweden 6-1 on Sunday (July 26) and beat Finland 5-1 on Monday (July 27).

Barnett, 19, saw regular ice time, registering an assist and two penalty minutes over the two contests, while the 18-year-old Cameron split goaltending duties with Harrison Boettiger.

Cameron made his Summer Showcase debut when he replaced Boettinger at 10:12 of the second period, with USA Blue leading Sweden 3-0. The Oilers prospect faced 12 shots over the remaining 29-plus minutes of the game, stopping 11 of them, as his team cruised to victory.

Against Finland, Cameron got the start and stopped all 13 shots he faced before tagging out to Boettinger at 10:35 of the second period. The Oilers prospect was particularly impressive during a Finnish power-play at the end of the first period, when he made several stellar saves to keep the game scoreless.

At the time Cameron exited the game against Finland, USA Blue was leading 1-0, thanks in part to a terrific outlet pass from Barnett, springing Ethan Wyttenbach on a breakaway that resulted in the game’s first goal.

Barnett a Lock for Team USA

For his part, Barnett should be a virtual lock to play at the 2027 IIHF World Junior Championship, considering he was part of Team USA at World Juniors 2026, suiting up for all five of the American’s games as an 18-year-old in Minnesota last winter.

The Glencoe, Illinois, native, who Edmonton selected with the 131^st overall pick at the 2025 NHL Draft, has a wealth of experience in major international competing, having also played defence for the United States at the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge and the 2025 IIHF U18 World Championship, serving as team captain for the latter.

Barnett is going into his second season of NCAA D1 men’s hockey with the University of Michigan Wolverines, who he helped advance to the 2026 Frozen Four.

Cameron Contends for Roster Spot

Cameron is one of four goaltenders remaining with Team USA, and given three netminders will make the World Juniors roster, that suggests he has good odds.

Like Barnett, Cameron has experience in major international competition, having represented his country at the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup, which was held at Rogers Place, and won gold as a member of Team USA at the 2025 World Junior A Challenge.

The Berwyn, Pennsylvania, product, who Edmonton selected with the 212^th overall pick at the 2026 NHL Draft in June, spent last season with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders of the USHL. He’s committed to play NCAA D1 men’s hockey at Boston College, beginning with the 2027–28 season.

Expected to Play Against Sweden

Barnett and Cameron were both scratches as the United States lost 3-2 to Finland on Wednesday (July 29). That means the pair are almost certain to play on Thursday (July 30) when the USA takes on Sweden at 3 p.m. EDT.

Following Thursday’s contest, the United States will close out the World Junior Summer Showcase will a highly anticipated game against Team Canada on Saturday (Aug. 1) at 3 p.m. EDT.
