With the World Cup of Hockey preliminary 16 player rosters named yesterday there are some interesting facts to note. Canada is heavily favored to win the tournament that takes place this fall with even Team USA general manager Dean Lombardi stating he had to build a team that could defeat Canada.
Each NHL team is represented in the tournament except for the Carolina Hurricanes who didn’t have a single player named to the tournament at this point. There is a possibility that Eddie Lack is eventually named to Team Sweden, he’s battling for a third-string position along with the likes of another front runner Robin Lehner (Buffalo). Defenseman Justin Faulk could also crack the Team USA roster later this summer, he currently leads the Hurricanes defense in scoring with 15 goals and 34 points in 55 games.
The Tampa Bay Lightning (10), Chicago Blackhawks (9), Boston Bruins (7), Detroit Red Wings (7) and Washington Capitals (7) lead the way with the most players named per team. Within that Tampa Bay (6), Chicago (6) and Detroit (6) lead the way with the most teams in the tournament represented.

There are two KHL members who have been named to the Czech Republic team. Forward Vladimir Sobotka who joined Avangard Omsk after turning down an arbitration offer this summer with the St. Louis Blues was named, as was his teammate defenseman Michal Kempny who’s rights currently doesn’t belong to an NHL team.
Team by team there are some notable omissions. Corey Perry (Anaheim) is yet to be named to Canada, Max Domi (Arizona) was left off the North American U-23 team thus far and the same can be said for Malcolm Subban (Boston). Breezing through the list the other big omissons are; Taylor Hall (Edmonton – Canada), John Klingberg (Dallas – Sweden), PK Subban (Montreal – Canada), Phil Kessel (Pittsburgh – USA), Kyle Okposo (NY Islanders – USA), Claude Giroux (Philadelphia – Canada), Alex Pietrangelo (St. Louis – Canada), Kevin Shattenkirk (St. Louis – USA) and Alex Edler (Vancouver – Sweden).
It’s not to think these players won’t be named to the final 23-man rosters for each of the eight teams competing at the World Cup this fall and named this June, but here is a NHL team by team list of all the players that have been named thus far:
