The Utah Mammoth, formerly known as the Arizona Coyotes, began its life as the original Winnipeg Jets of the World Hockey Association (WHA) and started playing in the 1972-73 season. They joined the NHL for the 1979-80 season when the league absorbed the WHA and the team remained in Winnipeg through the 1995-96 season. In Winnipeg, the team made the playoffs 11 times in 17 NHL seasons but never made it past the division finals. Prior to the 1996-97 season, the team relocated to Arizona and became the Phoenix Coyotes, although they changed their location name from Phoenix to Arizona for the 2014-15 season.
