2017 Mock Entry Draft Revisited: Surprisingly Impressive Results

This year’s NHL draft was supposed to be “wide open” and a “crapshoot” — starting at the third overall pick, or potentially even the first.

There were supposedly 20 or more prospects in the mix to go top 10 and upwards of 60 capable of cracking the top 31 and becoming first-round picks.

So, I wasn’t overly optimistic about my sixth annual mock entry draft producing much in the way of positive results.

Nico Hischier
(Amy Irvin/The Hockey Writers)
The New Jersey Devils made Nico Hischier the highest-drafted Swiss player in history on Friday.

It didn’t get off to a great start either, when the New Jersey Devils took Nico Hischier over Nolan Patrick at No. 1 — I was still a Nolan over Nico guy.

However, the rest of the first round and the start of the second round played out much like I had predicted, to my surprise.

By The Numbers

10 of 11 — Although the order of selection was wrong, I had 10 names right through the top 11 picks to start the first round. Timothy Liljegren fell out of the top 11 from my mock, replaced by Michael Rasmussen in real life.

28 of 31 — Go figure, the year I expect the worst, I wind up matching my best showing in the six-year history of these mocks (27 of 30 in 2014). For all the first-round possibilities, I correctly predicted 28 of 31 prospects this year. My fallers were Nic Hague (25), Kole Lind (30) and Conor Timmins (31). The three prospects taking their place were all second-rounders for me in Pierre-Olivier Joseph (32), Morgan Frost (56) and Shane Bowers (46). Joseph was the first pick of the second round in my mock, and it’s worth noting that I had Frost as a first-rounder (25) in my sneak peek mock from June 14 before backing off on that somewhat bold prediction. He went 27th.

(Amy Irvin/The Hockey Writers)
Morgan Frost was one of the prospects I couldn’t make up my mind over — slotting him 25th in my initial sneak peek mock, but then dropping him all the way down to 56th in my revised mock. I should have stuck with my gut since Frost wound up going 27th overall to the Philadelphia Flyers.

32 of 34 and 33 of 36 — Yes, it gets better. Timmins, Lind and Hague were selected with the first three picks of the second round and, combined with Joseph, improved my total to 32 of 34. I also had Isaac Ratcliffe at 36 and he went 35th, one of several other close calls. At that point, I was missing Frost (27), Bowers (28) and Jesper Boqvist (36). Instead, I had Jaret Anderson-Dolan (33), Mike DiPietro (34) and Jason Robertson (35) rounding out my top 35.

47 of 62 — The rest of the second round humbled me in a hurry. By comparison, last year I went 26 of 30 in the first round and 54 of 61 through two rounds. Overall, a better batting percentage in 2016, but I’m more proud of this 2017 performance. For those wanting to know the rest of my track record for the first round, I correctly predicted 22 in 2015, 26 in 2013 and 25 in 2012 (25, 26, 27, 22, 26, 28 from 2012 to 2017).

145 of 217 — Do the math and I missed 72 prospects this year, 39 of them were among my honourable mentions and the other 33 were not ranked for my mock. Again, that was slightly worse than last year when I missed 58 (153 of 211 in 2016). I correctly predicted 67 per cent of the prospects who were drafted this year, down from 73 per cent last year.

Correct Picks

3) Dallas Stars — Miro Heiskanen (LHD, HIFK, Finland)

4) Colorado Avalanche — Cale Makar (RHD, Brooks, AJHL)

Kailer Yamamoto
(Amy Irvin/The Hockey Writers)
Many mocks, including mine, correctly predicted Kailer Yamamoto to the Oilers at 22nd overall, but Edmonton had some intriguing options with Klim Kostin, Kristian Vesalainen and Eeli Tolvanen surprising still available.

22) Edmonton Oilers — Kailer Yamamoto (RW, Spokane, WHL)

29/26) Dallas Stars (from Anaheim) — Jake Oettinger (G, Boston University, NCAA)

26/29) Chicago Blackhawks — Henri Jokiharju (RHD, Portland, WHL)

NOTE: I wound up getting only five picks completely correct (all in the first round), or technically just three if the Dallas-Chicago pick swap voids the fact I had the right prospects going to both those teams. My sneak peek mock actually had six right, also predicting Elias Pettersson to Vancouver at fifth overall, but the Canucks’ fan base convinced me their team was targeting Cody Glass and I made that change for my revised mock.

Right Team, Wrong Pick (mock ranking to draft position)

Eetu Luostarinen (Carolina, 104 to 42)

Jake Leschyshyn (Vegas, 96 to 62)

Alexei Lipanov (Tampa Bay, 48 to 76)

Tobias Geisser (Washington, 151 to 120)

Skyler McKenzie (Winnipeg, 105 to 198)

NOTE: In addition to those five or six completely correct picks, I had another five or six prospects getting drafted by the right team but with the wrong pick. The sixth being Matthew Strome to Philadelphia (75 to 106) in my sneak peek mock.

Cal Foote, Kelowna Rockets, WHL
(Marissa Baecker/Shoot the Breeze)
I figured Cal Foote would go right in the middle of the first round, anywhere from 13 to 16 — be it to Vegas (13, 15), Tampa Bay (14) or Calgary (16).

Close Calls (mock ranking to draft position)

Cody Glass (5 to 6)

Cal Foote (15 to 14)

Josh Norris (21 to 19)

Conor Timmins (31 to 32)

Kole Lind (30 to 33)

Isaac Ratcliffe (36 to 35)

Jack Dugan (140 to 142)

Marian Studenic (142 to 143)

Denis Smirnov (155 to 156)

NOTE: Those nine prospects were all drafted within three spots of where I had them ranked. It gets a little nerdy from here on, but those who enjoy reflecting on mock results should appreciate the effort that went into compiling these remaining lists and the information that can be gleaned.

(Judy Simpson/Tri-City Americans)
I should have known better than to pass over Michael Rasmussen so many times. Sure, his draft year was cut short by injury, but he’s still a 6-foot-5 centre oozing with offensive talent. The Detroit Red Wings made Rasmussen a top-10 pick.
