The Carolina Hurricanes were founded in 1971 as the New England Whalers of the World Hockey Association (WHA). They joined the NHL in 1979 and became known as the Hartford Whalers. In 1997, they relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina, and changed their name to the Carolina Hurricanes. Prior to joining the NHL, the Hurricanes/Whalers won the 1973 Avco Cup as WHA champions, and have since won a Stanley Cup, which they captured in 2006. They also reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2002, which they lost to the Detroit Red Wings.
