Kochetkov’s Record Setting Game Helps Hurricanes Secure 7-0 Win

The Carolina Hurricanes Sunday afternoon began the month of November like they ended October, winning another hockey game. They defeated the Winnipeg Jets 7-0 on Kids Day in Raleigh to claim their 12th win of the season. Not only that, “The Nyetminder” Pyotr Kochetkov sets another Hurricanes record to build on his historical start to the 2026-27 season.

Setting Records & Earning Some Wins

Kochetkov continues his historical season by earning his second shutout of 2026-27, giving him 13 in his career. He ties Mike Liut for third all-time in Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers history. He only trails Cam Ward (27) and Artūrs Irbe (20). After being named the NHL’s Third Star of October, he’s more than earned another accolade to what’s already an impressive start to this season.

Not only that, Kochetkov’s 10th win of the season set the franchise record for most consecutive wins at anytime. He passed Cam Ward (2008-09) and Brandon Bussi (2x in 2025-26), who had nine. After the win, he’s 10-0-0 with a 1.49 goals-against average, a .929 save percentage, & two shutouts. Hurricanes goalie coach Paul Schonfelder said he thinks the Russian netminder could reach an elite level this season, he’s certainly done that.

Sean Walker stated after the game, when asked about Kochetkov this season, “We’re super comfortable and confident with him back there. We know how talented and skilled he is. He makes it easy on the D on a nightly basis the way he can handle the puck and break it out. He’s playing at an awesome level right now, and I’m just happy that we’re able to limit those high-danger chances. And when he does get them, he’s making big saves. So just super proud of him — happy he’s off to a hot start. It’s pretty awesome.”

The Hurricanes are now 10 games over .500, as they’re 12-2-2 through 16 games. They’ve collected 26 out of a possible 32 points to begin 2026-27. The remarkable thing is that they started 0-1-1, then went 12-1-1 since Oct. 2.

What a way to kick off November for the Hurricanes, as they had six players have a multi-point game. Walker got the scoring started with a shorthanded goal. He finished with a two-goal game. Logan Stankoven added three points, one of them being his team-leading 10th goal of the season. Shayne Gostisbehere had two assists, along with Seth Jarvis, who has six assists on the season. Sebastian Aho has a team-leading 21 points after a goal and an assist.

Regarding the Hurricanes, they say Finns get Wins, and that’s certainly true, as Juuso Välimäki continues his hot run of late, scoring his second goal of the season. Furthermore, Jesperi Kotkaniemi scored his fourth of 2026-27, passing last year’s total in 14 games.

Mark Jankowski scored his eighth goal in nine games, as he is staying red hot. He’s been unbelievable since taking over the third line center role with Jordan Staal being out due to injury. The fact that he’s only making $1.85 million per season for 2026-27 and 2027-28 is remarkable for getting your moneys worth for the Hurricanes with that production.

All in all, Sunday was a Funday for Kids Day in Raleigh to begin November for the Hurricanes. They continue to win, and showing that the Stanley Cup hangover won’t slow this team down. They’re currently on a six-game point streak after the win Sunday against the Jets. Their next game is Tuesday, Nov. 3, against the Nashville Predators. It’ll be the first meeting of the season between the two teams. Can they make it a seven-game point streak after Tuesday?
