The Edmonton Oilers were started in 1971 as one of the founding franchises of the World Hockey Association (WHA). After seven WHA seasons, which included a loss to the Winnipeg Jets in the last Avco Cup Final, the Oilers were one of the four teams to merge with the NHL. The Oilers experienced immediate success in the NHL by qualifying for the playoffs in their first 13 seasons, winning five Stanley Cups in the process. The 1980s Oilers teams were some of the best in league history and featured some of hockey’s most legendary names, including Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and Paul Coffey. The 1990s were less kind to them and the team bottomed out in the 2010s, which resulted in them earning multiple first-overall picks, including Connor McDavid, who by all intents and purposes is the modern-day Gretzky.

2 Oilers Mentioned as Trade Candidates When Evander Kane Returns

The Edmonton Oilers have played well to start the season, snapping out of a slow start and improving their record to 6-5-1 through their first 12 games. While McDavid continues to rehab his leg injury, forward Evander Kane also continues to rehab multiple injuries he suffered during last season’s playoff run and could be aiming for a return as early as January 2025. If Kane does…

Top 3 All-Time Oilers Goalies

Goaltending: hockey’s most precarious and polarizing position. The masked men often take the blame when the team loses, and receive little credit when they win. They face 100 MPH slap shots, and 200-pound players barreling into them. They’re quirky and unique, but no team can get by without a good…
