Jets Could Explore Massive Connor Hellebuyck Trade This Summer

The idea of the Winnipeg Jets moving Connor Hellebuyck once seemed impossible. He is the face of the franchise, one of the NHL’s best goaltenders, and arguably the biggest reason the Jets have remained competitive over the last several seasons.

However, after another disappointing playoff exit and growing speculation around the direction of the organization, Hellebuyck’s name has quietly started to surface in offseason trade discussions. While there is no indication the Jets are actively shopping their franchise goaltender, the reality is that every option may be on the table if management believes the current core has hit its ceiling.

The biggest complication in any potential deal is Hellebuyck’s contract situation. The veteran netminder owns a full no-movement clause, meaning he controls the process entirely. If he does not want to leave Winnipeg, a trade simply does not happen. But if there is mutual interest in a fresh start — especially for a contender or a team looking to accelerate its rebuild — the Jets could explore blockbuster scenarios that reshape the future of the organization.

Would the Jets Consider a Full Reset?

The Jets are entering a pivotal offseason. Questions continue to surround the long-term direction of the roster, particularly after falling short once again in the postseason despite high expectations.

Trading Hellebuyck would not necessarily signal a full rebuild, but it could represent a retool centered around younger assets and future flexibility. Winnipeg already owns the eighth overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, and packaging that selection with Hellebuyck could allow general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff to aggressively move into the top three.

In a draft projected to feature elite franchise-level talent at the top, that possibility becomes intriguing.

For Winnipeg, the logic would revolve around maximizing value while Hellebuyck remains one of the league’s premier goaltenders. Goaltenders of his caliber rarely become available, and contenders or rebuilding teams looking to take a major step forward could view him as the missing piece.

Still, moving a Vezina-caliber goalie is an enormous gamble. The Jets would need to believe they are receiving a foundational return capable of reshaping the franchise for years to come.

Could San Jose Be a Trade Partner?

One of the most fascinating hypothetical destinations is the San Jose Sharks.

The Sharks own the second overall pick in the draft and remain in the middle of a rebuild. However, they are also reaching the point where they may want to accelerate the process and become more competitive around their emerging young core.

A package involving Hellebuyck and the eighth overall pick heading to San Jose in exchange for the second overall selection and Yaroslav Askarov would certainly draw attention across the league.

From Winnipeg’s perspective, the deal would be centered around long-term upside. Askarov remains one of hockey’s most highly regarded young goaltenders and could become the next starter in Winnipeg. Pairing him with a top-two draft pick would give the Jets a chance to reset their timeline while still remaining competitive.

The challenge is whether San Jose would even have interest.

The Sharks already possess a promising young goaltender in Askarov and may prefer using their assets to address other organizational weaknesses, particularly on defense. San Jose has struggled defensively for years, and many around the league believe adding a top-pairing blueliner help should be their priority rather than upgrading in goal.

There is also the question of timing. While Hellebuyck would immediately improve the Sharks, are they truly ready to contend? Trading away a premium pick and a top goalie prospect only makes sense if management believes the rebuild is nearing completion.

Still, the allure of adding a proven elite goaltender can change organizational thinking quickly. A young core featuring Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith, and Hellebuyck suddenly looks far more competitive in the Pacific Division.

Buffalo Could Be a Serious Dark Horse

Another team that continues to surface in speculation is the Buffalo Sabres. Buffalo has spent years searching for stability in net and remains under pressure to finally end its lengthy playoff drought. The Sabres possess one of the NHL’s deepest prospect pools and have the kind of young assets that could interest Winnipeg.

One name that stands out immediately is Devon Levi.

Levi remains highly regarded despite experiencing some ups and downs early in his professional career. For the Jets, acquiring a younger goalie with starter potential could soften the blow of moving Hellebuyck while also aligning better with a younger core moving forward.

The Sabres could potentially build a package around Levi, additional prospects, and high-end draft capital. Winnipeg would likely demand significant value in return, especially considering Hellebuyck’s status as one of the league’s best goaltenders.

From Buffalo’s perspective, adding Hellebuyck could completely change the trajectory of the franchise. The Sabres have offensive firepower, young talent, and emerging pieces throughout the lineup, but inconsistent goaltending has repeatedly held them back. A true elite starter could finally stabilize the team and help push them into playoff contention in the Eastern Conference.

The biggest hurdle again comes back to Hellebuyck himself. Would Buffalo be a destination he would approve? That remains the key factor in every hypothetical discussion.

The No-Movement Clause Changes Everything

Unlike many trade rumors that gain traction around the league, the Hellebuyck situation is unique because the player controls virtually all leverage.

A full no-movement clause is one of the strongest protections a player can have in the NHL. With Hellebuyck under contract through 2031, the Jets are under no pressure to move him unless both sides believe a change is necessary. That significantly narrows the market and makes any blockbuster scenario far more complicated to pull off.

Contenders would naturally have interest, but teams outside of immediate playoff contention may struggle to convince Hellebuyck to make the move unless they can present a clear long-term vision.

For Winnipeg, that reality limits flexibility. The Jets cannot simply move him to the highest bidder. Any deal would need alignment from both the organization and the player.

Is a Trade Actually Likely?

At this stage, a Hellebuyck trade still feels more like a possibility than a probability. Elite goaltenders are extraordinarily difficult to replace, and Winnipeg knows exactly what it has in Hellebuyck. Moving on from a franchise player of that caliber is not a decision organizations make lightly.

However, the fact these conversations are even happening says a lot about where the Jets currently stand. Another early playoff exit has intensified pressure on management to evaluate every path forward. If Winnipeg believes the current core cannot realistically compete for a Stanley Cup, then exploring major changes — including potentially moving Hellebuyck — becomes understandable.

Whether that means packaging him with the eighth overall pick to pursue a franchise-changing draft opportunity or targeting younger assets from a team like Buffalo, the Jets could become one of the NHL’s most fascinating teams to watch this offseason.

And if Hellebuyck is willing to consider a move, the entire NHL landscape could shift because of it.
