Avs Claim Chris Wagner, Semyon Varlamov to IR

The Colorado Avalanche have placed goaltender Semyon Varlamov on injured reserve and claimed forward Chris Wagner off waivers from the Anaheim Ducks, the team announced on Sunday.

Varlamov’s placement on IR is retroactive to November 10, when Reto Berra took the reins in net. Varlamov sustained the groin injury that will lay him up during a practice on November 11.

Berra has a .953 save percentage through eight games and seven starts this season, including four straight games at .926 or above and a 39-save win over Montreal on Saturday night.

The team also claimed Wagner from the Ducks, who takes Varlamov’s spot on the active roster, though something will need to adjust on their roster before their next game and it would seem unlikely that they would waive Wagner to make a move.

Wagner played 11 games for the Ducks this season and grabbed three with the San Diego Gulls in the AHL.

The 24-year-old 5th round draft pick has played 20 NHL games in his career, suiting up in nine games last season. He’s still looking for his first NHL point.
