Kings News & Rumors: Boeser, Rantanen, Loss to Blues

The Los Angeles Kings seem poised to try and make a deep playoff run this season. They came up short last season being eliminated yet again by the Edmonton Oilers. They made some strong moves before the 2024-25 campaign to bolster their roster, including the signing of forward Warren Foegele who has worked out extremely well for them, and it seems as though they’re going to be active at the 2025 Trade Deadline. In this edition of Kings News & Rumors, we take a look at their connection to both Brock Boeser and Mikko Rantanen, and we touch on their recent loss to the St. Louis Blues to start the month of March.

Kings Interested in Canucks’ Brock Boeser, Unlikely Before Deadline

The Kings have been linked to Vancouver Canucks’ forward Brock Boeser, and according to a report from David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, he is a player they would love to get their hands on, but it’s more likely that something happens during the offseason. As mentioned in his article, he doesn’t think they will make a move to acquire him before the trade deadline.

Boeser, who is 28 years old, has scored 18 goals and added 18 assists for 36 points through 53 games this season. Throughout his career, he has scored 197 goals and added 223 assists for 420 points through 532 games which comes out to a 0.79 points-per-game average. He has established himself as a strong two-way forward who can dominate at both ends of the ice at certain times, but his extension negotiations and his asking price might force the Canucks to make a move.

Boeser is a pending unrestricted free agent with a $6.65 million cap hit through the end of this season. Time will tell if the Kings pursue him, but it doesn’t seem like anything will happen before Friday’s (March 7) deadline.

Kings Best Fit for Rantanen?

The Carolina Hurricanes made a monster deal earlier in the season acquiring superstar forward Mikko Rantanen from the Colorado Avalanche. He is a pending unrestricted free agent and it seems as though he may be on the move again if Rantanen and the Hurricanes can’t find a way to get an extension done before the trade deadline. With that being said, it was suggested by Darren Dreger that the Kings could be the best fit for Rantanen.

The Kings have plenty of future assets available to try and pull off a monster deal for Rantanen as a rental as they look to make a playoff push, but time will tell if they even consider making a move of that magnitude, or if they would prefer to make smaller moves and just add some depth pieces.

Kings Lose 4-1 to Blues

On Saturday (Mar. 1), the Kings faced off against the St. Louis Blues. They only had one goal, scored by Kevin Fiala, and ended up losing 4-1. Colton Parayako and Pavel Buchnevich had goals in the first period following Fiala’s opening goal, while Zack Bolduc scored in the second period to give the Blues a 3-1 lead heading into the third period. Dylan Holloway sealed the deal in the third period with a goal, and the Kings’ record dropped to 31-19-8. Luckily, they still sit third in the Pacific Division with games in hand on the Edmonton Oilers and Vegas Golden Knights, who are above them.

The Kings could make a deep run this postseason with the right moves at the 2025 Trade Deadline. Time will tell what they choose to do with the assets they have available to them, but I would expect them to be active and see what’s available for them to bring in.
