New Jersey Devils forward Stephen Gionta has been fined $2,284.95 for spearing Mark Borowiecki of the Ottawa Senators in Thursday’s match, the Department of Player Safety announced on Friday.
It was a pretty vicious jab to the stomach after Borowiecki ran over Gionta. You can see the play in the GIF below from @myregularface on Twitter.

Gionta got a five minute major and a game misconduct for spearing on the play.
Gionta was contrite after the game, according to The Record’s Tom Gulitti.
“You saw the replay and that can’t happen,” Gionta said. “First, I apologize to Mark for that play. Obviously, I let my teammates down with it and, luckily, they bailed me out. I just lost my cool and that can’t happen,” he said.
Borowiecki played the entire game and this is the 32-year-old’s first bit of discipline from the Department of Player Safety in his six-year NHL career.
Through seven games this season Gionta has yet to register a point and has taken nine shots while averaging 11:15 of all situation ice time per game.
Last year with the Devils he had five goals and eight assists through 61 games.
