Ryan Smyth- Still On Mountain Time

The 2009 NHL trade deadline is in the books.  The rumors coming out of Colorado were that Ryan Smyth and his huge salary would be sent packing to a team in the playoff hunt.  Fortunately, the Colorado Avalanche aren’t yet willing to consider themselves a rebuilding franchise.

Paul Statsny and Joe Sakic (99% chance) will both be healthy and back for next season.  Smyth and his remaining 3 years and $18.75 million contact will be joining them as will Ian Laperriere who stayed put despite many rumors.  The city of Denver should be extremely happy that the Avs have yet to pack it in.  Finding a true #1 netminder should be the only concern in the Mile High City this off-season.

Good move on the Avs part for keeping Smyth, and trust me, I feel your pain on the goalie situation. If we don’t find a solid #2 soon, it looks like it’s gunna be a long 5 years for Kipper.
